The Samuel Culbertson Mansion Bed and Breakfast Inn

Our company has used this site, The Culbertson Mansion Bed and Breakfast for our business meetings for the past three years and feel that it is the best kept secret in Louisville. Our schedule begins as our associates gather on Friday evening, enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants, then to the mansion for relaxing and a casual planning time for the year's activities. In the morning after a hearty breakfast we begin our business meeting and are served lunch (for an extra charge). The quiet and tranquil setting is key to our successful planning. There are approximately twelve of us on the planning committee. We find that this time away from a busy office setting lends itself to better productivity for our company, and none of us mind being pampered with all the good food and luxurious surroundings.

Unfortunately the innkeeper is no longer able to keep up wih this old mansion. It is large, beautiful, but dark, dingy, musty, and in sore need of repairs. The place has not had a thorough cleaning in years. There is a layer of dust on everything. The paint is peeling or fallen off. The wallpaper in the President's Room is peeling away. There were cobwebs on most of the nice antiques.

We did not feel the usual B&B hospitality. They did not have treats or drinks available. When we asked for water, the reaction is that we put him out. He complained about his health and his help. The musty odor throughout would be real trouble for those with allergies.

It is a shame. Our guess is the place was once beautiful. We have stayed at dozens of B&Bs throughout the country and this is the worst. We hate to say this because we feel bad for the innkeeper. But, we must tell you like it currently is. There are many other options in Old Louisville.

In times of war and strife, it's nice to find a haven of love and beauty. My fellow travelers and I found such a retreat last weekend at a gracious bed and breakfast in the heart of the Historic Old Louisville, KY. This place is a gem among jewels.

The 135-year-old stately mansion embraces an era when romance was an integral part of life. The Eros and Aphrodite motif is evident in all the details from the classical paintings and bronze sculptures in the foyer right down to the pineapple charlotte mousse casserole served at breakfast with a dollop of schlagobers and a fresh strawberry topping. Love at first bite!

The Inn is located in a splendid location where songbirds nest in the magnolia trees that scent the air. It is a short walk, in an architecturally fascinating city, to museums, antique and period clothing shops, bakeries, and cafes. Everyone we encountered in the district was warm, friendly, and helpful. We spent two delightful nights at the Inn.

Having owned and operated an historic B&B for five years in the unlikely tourist destination of downtown Detroit, Michigan, I am all too familiar with the problems inherent in structures over a century old. These houses tend to get creepy and creaky. Neither was evident in any of the public or guest rooms and stairways we toured and photographed. Turning a grand old home into a place where one can feel totally at home and ease for three edgy and artsy Yankees is no easy feat. We were all struck by how well all the furnishings and accessories went together so tastefully. It is easy to over-do such a grand scale mansion, but Rudy Van Meter, the charming Southern gentlemen who is innkeeper has done a masterful job at creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.

My well-traveled friends and I agree the Samuel Culbertson Mansion Historic Inn is a feast for the senses. We would award four pineapples, the sign of hospitality!

Culbertson Mansion, Louisvile kentucky.
The mansion is beautifully decorated with antiques and collectibles. We love staying in the different rooms. My husband and I have been staying at the B&B with Rudy (the owner) for ten years. We went for our first aniversary and now go for any occasion. The mansion is located in the Victorian district of Louisville so the homes in the area are all wonderful to look at.

I stayed in the Knights of KY suite. It was one of the most amazing places I have ever stayed!!! The mansion is beautifully decorated, the service was outstanding, and the food fabulous! The rooms are big and furnished with amazing quality antiques. I was overwhelmed with the manison. I just cannot say enough wonderful things. One of my favorite places to stay!!!! I can't wait to go back!!

The house is a beautiful, old mansion decorated to the hilt with furnishings, paintings and knick knacks from the 1800's. The rooms are spacious and beautiful, although a bit spooky with large oil portraits hanging across from your bed. I have to say the breakfast was not good at all. The fruit was brown and old looking and the eggs were oily and had a really bad taste. Also, The care-taker was really sick and was cooking our breakfast.

We enjoyed our stay overall. Rudy prepared southern-style biscuits & gravy for breakfast. We stayed in the East Room which is a large room. I did not like that there was no door or curtain between the room and the bathroom and I found the bed uncomfortable. The room itself, however, was large and nicely decorated. The staff was friendly and helpful.
