“Like coming home!”

Gorgeous is an understatement when describing the amazing décor of this historic home. Antiques cover every inch of every room, and the lighting treatments are the showpieces. However, all this beauty is eclipsed by the warmth and hospitality we felt every minute of our stay. We are looking forward to our next trip. Did I forget to mention the BOURBON SAUCE!

Room Tip: Every room is unique and gorgeously furnished. I would be happy in any of them. All are surprisingly...

Sometimes you have to leave the cares of work and world behind you and take a step back into a place in time when life was not so hectic. I am sure 1897 had it's own problems, but The Culbertson Mansion is the perfect place for a girl's getaway these days! Our rooms were comfortable and beautifully decorated with antiques, having all the amenities we needed. We loved sitting on the balcony until the "wee hours" just relaxing..and laughing a lot. Our delicious breakfast was served in the grand dining room, seating all twelve of us comfortably. Conversation was light, easy and just plain hilarious at times. I was amazed at how all of us felt so at home here. The mansion has a relaxed feel to it, even though it is grand and elegant. We will definitely go back...next time taking more friends...and we will stay longer. The stress of life just melted away! Rudy and Jason were perfect hosts. Delicious food, great fun, and even new friends! We highly recommend an after breakfast walking tour around the St. James Court area.

Everything was great: getting there was easy, parking was no problem, Rudy and staff were gracious, the SCM is stunning, our bedroom (The East Room) was lovely, the bath was old-world elegant, and breakfast both mornings were delicious. Then there were all the pluses: the bourbon sauce (+++++!), the grand piano Rudy graciously let me play since I am a pianist, the unique basement with Rathskeller, spa and pool table, the gardens, their suggestions of things to do and places to eat, the attention to detail from the home's furnishings to the bath salts, and the overall feeling of being in another era made the SCM a five-star experience!

We stayed 3 nights (Memorial Day weekend) at the Samuel Culbertson Mansion Bed and Breakfast in Old Louisville. This was our first experience at a B & B and we really didn't know what to expect. Walking in the front door was like stepping back in time. It is easy to imagine life at the turn of the century in these surroundings. The mansion itself is like a museum, faithfully maintained and decorated beautifully, but also very much a beloved home. Third owner of the mansion and innkeeper, Rudy Van Meter, has an encyclopedic knowledge of Louisville history and graciously answered all our questions. He and Jason Van Slatten served us wonderful gourmet breakfasts (hence the title of the review) and recommended excellent restaurants for us. They went out of their way to provide safe storage for our bicycles so we didn't have to leave them in the car. We found the mansion to be in an excellent location to launch cycling tours of Old Louisville and the city in general, made easier with maps provided by Jason. Our room was comfortable and equally beautifully decorated with a lavish en suite bath. We may never stay in a hotel again, but boy are our B & B standards high now! Highly recommended.

We took a weekend trip to Louisville but didn't want to spend an arm and leg on lodging. I only booked the place because it had affordable options. Upon arrival we were completely wowed. The inside is gorgeous. Our room was spacious and the entire home was well kept. The staff are very friendly. Our breakfast was delicious, too. I highly recommend a stay here.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again....We don't like hotels...we like B&B's...and we LOVE historic house B&B's! The older, the better! We adore the ambiance and atmosphere, the character that can only be acquired through age. So if you are of similar mind, the Samuel Culbertson Mansion is the only place to consider staying in Louisville. The location is unsurpassed, in the very heart of Louisville's famous and unsurpassed Victorian Historic District and also very conveniently located near art galleries, restaurants, antique shops, museums, and the Kentucky Exposition Center. Just the experience of driving and walking through this lovely historic district is simply breathtaking. But that is just the tip of the iceburg! The Culberton Mansion is a museum in itself, artfully and beautifully decorated with original and period pieces as well as objects d'art from around the world! Our room was as comfortable and clean as it was lovely and was stocked with every possible amenity. Our stay was originally for two nights but we extended a third night, and our breakfasts were different each day but equally scrumptious and so hearty that we did not need lunch! Rudy, the owner/host/tour advisor/gourmet chef/curator is old Kentucky hospitality personified. He is welcoming, kind, fascinating, efficient, and knowledgeable. Thank you for a perfect stay. We definitely want to come back!

Room Tip: We stayed in the President's Room and HIGHLY recommend it....but we had the opportunity to look...

We booked our room several months ahead of time and specifically asked if there was somewhere off street where we could park our Harleys and were told it would be no problem. When we arrived we were told 'there's plenty of room on the street' and that was that. After that the innkeeper was no where to be seen til the next morning when we were served a horrible breakfast of old soggy fruit salad, mini hostess donuts , burned sausage patties and hard biscuits...yum.The house itself is a beautiful museum...tv in room smaller than my laptop screen and ineffective air conditioning. Not sure where that excellent breakfast and attentive service was when we were there. Got the feeling 'bikers' were not welcome.
