“Pristine Setting in the Middle of Louisville”
Reviewed March 23, 2009

Driving up to Farmington is sort of like a step back in time – because even though you are right by the interstate and a busy shopping area, you have to drive down a long road with trees arching over the whole road – like you would have expected the approach to the house to have looked like back when Lincoln visited!

Farmington, the home of John and Lucy Speed – close friends of Abraham Lincoln, is a very sort of simple Federal style home. There was a 15 minute audio recording that played while we watched the lights focus on the displays around the room. I learned a lot of new stuff I did not know before.

Our guide took us out the back door towards the main house, stopping to point out a few things along the way including several re-created outbuildings and a slave monument.

There was a lot of information on the walking tour of the house… the guide was very knowledgeable and was able to tell some personal family stories during the tour. We got to see all of the rooms in the house, including the dining room that Lincoln apparently famously embarrassed himself in with bad table manners when visiting the Speed family!

After touring the house we were left free to wander the grounds which were very pretty. Behind the house there is a formal garden, and behind that a big open field. I had grabbed a self-guided tour of the grounds brochure from the visitor’s center so I walked around a little bit. This is a great spot hidden in Louisville with rolling acreage, gardens, and of course a great old plantation house!
