A must see for racing fans. It's located at Churchill Downs. I went the week before the Derby and it wasn't too crowded but the tour had about 40 people. So much history! Before the tour, everyone sits in a theater and they show a film on all four walls. It was amazing. The tour takes you behind the scenes and you get to go out to the finish line area. Great pics of the twin spires and the winner's circle. The guide was a guy who really loved what he was doing. Kept us all laughing. We got to see Mine That Bird, the derby winner, in the barn. The artifacts and pics and displays in the museum were wonderful. Stopped in the cafe for a mint julep and they gave me the 2013 derby glass for free. Afterward, I walked over to the track area where simulcast racing was since the Track didn't open for the season yet and strolled around in there and made a few bets. You could walk out to the grandstand of the track for more photo ops of an empty Churchill Downs. Lots of parking.

I've never been into horses or racing, but this seemed like a classic Louisville experience. So I booked a tour in advance & was pleased my timing put me there during Derby week. The place was definitely hopping the day I was there. It was cool to see the horses & barns on the backside tour. For the day I was visiting I was told there would be more action on the early tours, but I'm not sure if that's the case every day. There was also another shorter historical tour that took us into Churchill Downs and explained more about the history of the Derby. There is also a 2 story museum, a cool movie, and gift shop. I spent between 1-2 hours in the museum plus 1 hour for the backside tour & about 30 minutes for the historical tour.

The museum is a MUST SEE if you are in Louisville for even one day. A tour inside Churchill Downs is included with your ticket. That is the best part. A tour of the backside is separate and was disappointed that they were already sold out for the day. Make sure to get your ticket in advance for that tour. I heard it was really good.

Nice museum, great tours of Churchill Downs. A must-see for horse lovers. And very interesting for non-horse lovers.

You need to take both tours before you visit the museum. The tours are scheduled so that you can leave the area for lunch and return on your same admission. The museum is wonderful and a place where you could spend many hours---very well done.
