Give yourself at least a couple of hours at the museum on top of taking the tour of Churchill Downs. We initially only planned to stop in the gift shop on our way out of town, so we were cutting it close. Do not miss the movie on the history of the derby in the museum... the facility, the movie and the guard presenting the movie are excellent. Though we did not have much time to look at the museum exhibits after the movie and before our tour started, we did take in the hat exhibit and some Secretariat items. The information in the museum is well presented and very interesting; one could learn a great deal about the sport of horse racing if they had the time. The 30 minute Historic Walking Tour is included with admission and was perfect for our family. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We all enjoyed learning more about the history of Churchill Downs and the derby. Our kids want to go back for the big race! One disappointment was the resident Thoroughbred you get to visit at the end of the tour. The horse looked very old. I believe a previous derby winner will be the resident horse later this month. We would return, if not for the derby, at least for more time in the museum and the Barn and Backside Tour where you get to see the horse stalls, etc.

You could tell our guide Olivia was excited to be sharing with us everything she knew about this museum. I can only imagine what it would be like to be there the day of. Why would you miss this tour if you are in Louisville? Having toured will only enhance the day of the Kentucky Derby for me.

As a child I was obsessed with the Kentucky Derby so this was terrific. We had a couple of hours to wander around the museum as well as check out the tour of the grounds. We went on Easter Sunday. If I did it again I would try the tour with the barn and stable as well.

No doubt about it...Churchill Downs is larger than life! The history, the pageantry, the tradition...it's all captured right there in the Kentucky Derby Museum. Make sure you take advantage of photo ops with the likeness of Barbaro, the likeness of the reigning Derby champion, the starting gates. Kids loved the interactive aspects of the museum, especially as "jockey". Displays of elaborate ladies' hats are gorgeous! Pay close attention to the display of Derby recipe plates...snap a photo and you're on your way to hosting your own Derby party with authentic fare. Take advantage of the AAA discount if you are a cardholder. Enjoyed by the entire family!

We had a very short amount of time to see the grounds and museum. There was a short 360 degree video about the derby that was pretty amazing and a guided tour. I would like to have had at least two hours to see and enjoy every thing.
