Give yourself at least a couple of hours at the museum on top of taking the tour of Churchill Downs. We initially only planned to stop in the gift shop on our way out of town, so we were cutting it close. Do not miss the movie on the history of the derby in the museum... the facility, the movie and the guard presenting the movie are excellent. Though we did not have much time to look at the museum exhibits after the movie and before our tour started, we did take in the hat exhibit and some Secretariat items. The information in the museum is well presented and very interesting; one could learn a great deal about the sport of horse racing if they had the time. The 30 minute Historic Walking Tour is included with admission and was perfect for our family. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. We all enjoyed learning more about the history of Churchill Downs and the derby. Our kids want to go back for the big race! One disappointment was the resident Thoroughbred you get to visit at the end of the tour. The horse looked very old. I believe a previous derby winner will be the resident horse later this month. We would return, if not for the derby, at least for more time in the museum and the Barn and Backside Tour where you get to see the horse stalls, etc.
