Owner description: From its inception, Jean Farris has embraced our families’ history in agriculture, and, our passion for fine cuisine. With us, wine is best when sharing a table with good friends and good food. Here on the estate we grow our own fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs, and honey to use in the winery and in the kitchen. We serve our farm products with the wine, beer, and spirits that speak of our region. To us "Home-made" is a practice not a philosophy. With that our menu changes several times a year, reflecting the seasons. Staying in time and in touch with the cycles of seasons and what is naturally available to us. We look forward to having you joining us at our table and sharing a night at Jean Farris.

Our meal at Jean Farris was delicious and the locally grown wine perfect. The wait staff were very nice. As the restaurant is in a large, high ceiling room (converted barn) it did get a little noisy, but not so much to make it unpleasant. A great night out.

GRATUITY: a gift of money, over and above payment due for service, as to a waiter or bellhop; tip. Something given without claim or demand.

While the food, wine and service were all excellent, I was disappointed to discover that the gratuity had been already added to my tab for a group of only six people. My wife and I both looked it over and came to the same conclusion: "Idiots. We would normally have tipped almost twice this amount for this type of restaurant, but if they are so concerned about not getting a gratuity at all, so be it. That's all you'll get from us." And perhaps it's just me, but I find all such mandatory gratuities to be presumptuous, insulting and basically a cheap shot. It definitely lessened the experience.

Worst dining experience that we have had! The setting is beautiful, which only made the rest of the evening more of a dissapointment. The food was horrible but even worse was the service. The most rude server that claimed to be the manager was obnoxious and argumentative. Our whole party walked out disgusted and hungry.

Lexington, Ky, is of course best known for its horses and bourbon distilleries but in lovely country not far outside town is the Jean Farris Winery. It's a great place for tasting surprisingly good wines, most from vines grown in the region, and enjoying excellent snacks or perhaps a full meal.

Early one summer evening we were impressed by the smart bar where various wine tastings are available and an excellent selection of cheeses, including a Kentucky Stilton, and delicious home made sausage, all elegantly served.

Some wines are good, especially the Tempest blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon (grown here) and Cabernet Franc, or the white Viognier (also gown here). At least you can choose what you'd like a bottle of for a meal from the varied bistro menu.

The bonus is that in good weather, you can sit outside and enjoy the relaxing views of the vineyards and country as the sun sets. Our visit coincided with the annual lamb BBQ - using wood from oak wine barrels - and although the leg was a bit tough, the sauce and vegetables were excellent. I would especially recommend the appetisers - there is a special price for a selection of three. There's also weekend brunch.

During our visit there was a good singer guitarist who lulled us, and a good crowd of well-heeled diners, with old favourites.

Thoroughly recommended!

While visiting Lexington on business, we wanted to try something different and found the Jean Farris Winery had good reviews online. I can't imagine what there is to like. From the moment we walked in the door at 6:30 and were told we had to be out before 8:30 for the second seating, we were treated like we were lucky to be there. We had to ask three times to sample the wines before ordering a bottle; the waiter wanted us to take his advice instead of trying for ourselves. The portions were TINY and the prices were higher than New York City! Neither the food nor the wines were anything special. The wine is reasonably priced, the food is laughably overpriced.
