Description: Some guys are born curious. They can't just wonder what's around the corner. They've got to go see for themselves. The Greers are like that with food. You might call them culinary explorers. You might run into Lee tracking the true cubano in a Tampa barrio, the perfect pork chop in a Rio churrascaria. Phil sweet talking the secret of sweet corn tamales out of an ancient abuela in a Yucatan taqueria. One or both hot on the trail of the tastiest brisket taco. The most piquant Peruvian ceviche. The most authentic salsa. Margaritas that'll make you want to mambo. Whatever wows them on their travels, they bring right on back home. To wow you at Coba Cocina, Cobar Cantina, and Cocoh! Confectioner.

“A nice place for lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

My son and I decided to try this new place out for lunch on a Friday afternoon. We were seated right away in their beautiful dining room. I had no idea(nor did I know they existed) they had a jelly fish aquarium as the center piece. The service was a little slower than I like but not terribly so. The black bean dip(no cost) was excellent. It was served warm along with warm chips. I ordered the nacho and my son had the burritos. Both were adequate portions at a very reasonable price. I figured it would expensive because of the very modern interior. We finished the meal off with a visit to the bakery. They had all kinds of options-all of which looked delicious. Not sure how the crowd is for dinner and also not sure if dinner menu is more expensive. It is worth your time to give it a try.

“2nd time not so great”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

At our second outing to Coba I came away underwhelmed. Service was really slow and food was just okay. I'm not in a hurry to return. It still stays packed so hopefully they'll work out the kinks.

“All looks with no substance”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2013

This review is based on three different visits: one on opening day (fair), one a month later (poor), and one on May 7th (very poor).

First, the good. The concept is refreshing, with three different atmospheres within the same umbrella. You can have lunch or dinner close or next to a cylindrical water tank that extends the height of the dining area and whose lighting changes color every so often, reflecting off of the hundreds of jellyfish that are within it. You can have dessert in a casual area and avoid the diners altogether. Or you can have lighter fare in what might be called a sophisticated chic ambience in the bar area on the second floor, overlooking the diners below. This is where the good ends.

Now, the bad:

- The locale identifies itself as having food from across the Americas. In reality, it is a Mexican restaurant with a somewhat different spicing approach. It works, the first time, but the menu is so limited and the food so bland that after a third time it all just tastes the same.

- Service is horrendous. On this particular item, our first visit was barely passable. No drink refills, difficult to get a person to take your order, get the check, or get it processed. On our second visit, we were seated next to a couple with two children (see below). They had already ordered by the time we sat down. We ordered, ate our meal, paid, and left. The couple with the two children had yet to be served. The manager had to come twice to apologize, but still no food as we were leaving. On the third visit, one of the diners we were with actually grabbed a fork from the table and threw it on the ground, hard, to make noise. That made a waitress show up, after waiting 20 minutes for one to appear.

- Seating is shared. In particular, the tables around the jellyfish tank seat six. So if there's just two of you, as in our second visit, you'll be seated with someone else at the same table. While this might not be an issue for some, the tables are rather small and curve around the tank. If you are seated next to two children who like to play, as kids do, your dining experience will be quite diminished.

- The quality of the food is inconsistent. Given the sizes of our dining party varied each of the three times we visited, and that the menu is quite limited, we were able to sample the same dishes more than once, some three times. Pulled pork in their Cubano sandwich (lunch only) was non-existent on one plate, with just the ham making itself noticeable. The same sandwich on a second plate had both pork and ham, but was dry and flavorless. The steak fajitas had no flavor to speak of (and we are not your typical spicy hot Mexican fare foodies, in fact, we like flavor without having to down a four alarm fire). The Chicken Monterey was not grilled sufficiently and was thus a bit rubbery in one section. The only redeeming plate, if any, was the Agave Salmon, tasty on three different occasions.

- No substitutions or changes are allowed. The dishes come out as it says in the menu or you can't have them. Not even to remove stuff. No kidding, we asked on two of our visits to be told as such on each.

- There is no dessert. At least not if you are in the dining area. If you want dessert, you have to finish your meal, pay, and then move to the end of the locale to where the desserts are at, make a line, and pay again. We asked about this, and were told that was the way it worked. So yes, apparently they meant it to be that way.

Pricing is middle of the road. You don't pay enough to walk away feeling robbed with the food and service (the first time, at least), but you pay enough to think about going to a comparable restaurant. While the ambience is nicer and breathes of upscale, the food and service is actually worse than that of a typical Chili's, not to put Chili's down or up, but to serve as comparison. For your money, time, and tranquility, there are better places in Lexington to enjoy a meal.

“Just okay...”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

The decor and style of the restaurant are great - very fun atmosphere. The service was heinous to put it simply. There are literally 10 different things to point out about the service and the owner had to come over to apologize. We had 6 different servers during one visit - 1 server was crying when she came to our table and said she had to leave. Another server finally came over and said his name was Jose but the mgr later called him Josh - huh? I could go on and on.

Food was just okay. The best thing was the gaucomole! The beef burritos were good but everything else was average to below average. Shrimp tacos were flavorless. Refried beans were the worst ever - hard to describe. Salsa was just a puddle of garlic and it dominated the whole flavor of the salsa.

I was shocked when I heard the owners of Cheddar's started this concept as Cheddars is phenomenal for casual dining. I hope they can get their act together and figure it out because they must have spent a fortune on this Coba restaurant.

“Gelato is a Must”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 7, 2013

The in house, made from scratch gelato is the best. I've eaten here twice and my advice is skip the meal and just go to the cafe area and get the gelato. The complimentary chips, salsa and bean dip is nice. Lunch entrees are mediocre. I've had fish taco which was surprisingly good. It wasn't what I ordered though, the server messed up our order on that trip. I had soup and salad on the second trip which was ok, but on par with what I would get at Panera for the same price or less. Gelato is always good though and the staff in that area seem so energetic and happy. Try it and you won't be disappointed.
