“You Could Spend Hours Here!”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

That's right, no matter how small this little arboretum is, you could spend hours looking and taking pictures of the beautiful plants that surround you everywhere. The children's Garden is just magical. We brought very small kids with us one time, and they enjoyed the experience so much they cried when it was time to go. It's the perfect place to relax in the sun, and even have a picnic together. Plant lovers MUST come here, they'll enjoy it a lot more than they might think. The plants are EVERYWHERE, and the scenery is amazing. I recommend it to anyone who needs to kill time and is in the area. Children's Garden even allows you to play in a fake creek, with small waterfalls. It runs into a lake (although there's a barrier from swimming there) where kids can pick up a fishing rod or net and let their imaginations run wild (even though there aren't any fish other than minnows in the lake and the fishing poles are fake), plus there's so much forts and places to explore- including a scavenger hunt with a prize! It's a great little place.

“Great Spot for a Run or a Picnic”
Reviewed June 27, 2013

This place is beautiful! I used to go here all the time when I was in college. There's a paved path that's about 1.8 miles all the way around. You can add some distance when you loop through the preserved forest; which is a mulched path. You even run through an ancient tree that has fallen and they've cut the path through. They have done so much in the years I've been going! New bridges, walk through a garden, forest, and all less than a mile from campus.

“Thousands of roses and native plants”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

Went on a clear sunny 90+ June day so it was hot. Not sure what we were thinking not bringing any water, but there were water fountains at the visitor center and at the Home Demonstration Garden area near the potting and tool shed that saved us. The shady area with perennial plantings and fishpond were a nice way to get out of the sun. Beautiful plantings. I wish I could get my plants to grow as full and large. There were several good displays of gardening in small spaces at the Home Demonstration Garden, particularly interesting was the use of the espalier method of trellising fruit trees. This is a very useful technique for the urban gardner that I have read about but have not seen in person. Basically the tree branches are pruned and trained to follow horizontal guides that are 16-48" from the ground, keeping the tree short and the fruit within reach during harvest time. I included a few pics.

We arrived later in the day so we did not get to explore the visitors center or do the full 2 mile hike. Despite this, we spent about an hour and a half exploring and enjoying the park on our own. This is a fairly young arboretum so we are looking forward to future visits to see how the garden and trees mature in years to come.

The Arboretum is a great place to walk or run. It's also a wonderful place to take children and there are several places especially for children to run and play.
