Owner description: The only park of its kind in the world, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm, educational theme park and equine competition facility dedicated to man's relationship with the horse. Set on more than 1,200 acres in the heart of the Kentucky's famous Bluegrass region, the park is THE place to get close to horses! Featuring dozens of breeds of horse at work and at play, the park showcases the horse in daily equine presentations, horse drawn tours, horseback and pony rides, and an array of horse shows and special events throughout the year. The park's International Museum of the Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, is the world's largest equestrian museum. Offering both the experienced horseman and novice an opportunity to explore the many facets of humanity's relationship with the horse, the museum is dedicated to all breeds and disciplines of horse and covers some 50-million years of equine history. State-of-the-art technology complements rare artifacts and scholarly research to present a unique, educational, museum experience for all ages. The American Saddlebred Museum, the Showplace for Saddlebreds, celebrates Kentucky's first native breed of horse. The museum features interactive exhibits and a movie. With the park's own tourist activities and the numerous additional horse shows that take place in the equine competition facilities throughout the year, there can be a fair amount of walking involved, depending on visitor interest level. Comfortable shoes and clothing is recommended, appropriate for Kentucky's seasonal weather. Dogs and other pets are permitted on park grounds, as long as they are on a leash or in an approved carrier, although they may not be permitted in some buildings.

Loved our trip to the horse park!
Everything was clean and well maintained.
The horses were very well kept and treated well.
All the displays were interesting and even a little magical.
The only big problem they have is the availability of food. It's a park and
there isn't much in the food department---only one restaurant and only one
cashier taking orders! Super slow! The girl at the front desk advised us not to use
the snack shack when we got there so we used the restaurant. (She couldn't explain
why she didn't want us to go to the snack shack....?)
We wasted a lot of time waiting to order food and getting it.
We were there on a Tues and everything was nice and quiet...by 3 p.m. we practically
had the place to ourselves.
I'll certainly go back again...but will be sure to take food!

I have to be honest that I was expecting much more than what we actually got at the Kentucky Horse Park. We visited on a Monday, weather was nice and there were no crowds! It was Me (30), my friend (30), and our daughters (2, 5, 5 & 8). (A side note my 8yo daughter has been riding for about a year so we had some knowledge of horses).
We got to the park, paid our admission and went right in. We visited the various barns, watched the 'Horses of the Worlds' show, kids did the pony ride and we purchased items from the gift shop. The kids barn was the nicest for us, as our little kids enjoyed it, and they also said that they really liked the show which i thought was a little lacking. The pony ride is a led ride around a small corral. Each kid hops on and is lead around (2 at a time) around the small corral 3 laps. I thought the handlers lead the ponies too close to each other than what was safe but maybe those ponies are use to it? I also really felt sad for the ponies...but again i am sure a place like KHP would not overwork their animals. Between the shows and pony ride times we could not get to the horse pulled tour wagon rides which was a bummer! We all wanted to do that tour, but it only ran a few times that day. :( If this is something you want to do make it priority over the shows, etc.
We planned on eating a late lunch at the KHP, but when we went to the restaurant at 3:12 we were told that everything was closed and there was no food available in the park. We were very frustrated by this because we had no snacks with us and everyone was hungry. We ended up leaving early due to this....grumpy hungry kids are not fun to be around...we left the park to get them fed and by the time we were finished the park was closing (5 pm). My tip would be to pack snacks!
I had heard so much about the KHP and how great it was....dont get me wrong it is nice and there isnt really anything i could say negative about it (except for the lack of food on the ground), but i was just expecting so much more. Our kids liked it though, and thats the reason we went there in the first place so i would say the trip was a success. If you are going to be in Lexington and have a few hours to spare i would recommend the KHP, but i wouldnt make a trip to Lexington kust for it.

The Horse park has lots of walking they need carts for less able ,it appeared they had them but when I asked they said No walking only. We tried 2 different phone numbers to book before hand but neither answered, left message as they asked for a call back-STILL WAITING and while there the phone rang and no one picked up.many attractions eg blacksmith not open despite being middle of summer rush, restaurant cant cope with quick meals we were quoted 12-15mins for a take out sandwich!
We booked on the day with Shaun Washington Horse park Tours this was excellent and saved the day

Definitely visit Ky Horse Park if you're in the area. Many breeds of horses are represented in the park, and we especially love the draft barn. The museums are worth touring, and be sure and check out the campgrounds. Great place for a family visit.
