Lawrenceburg, KY (just west of Lexington) is the home of one of the better known bourbon producers in the country. The Wild Turkey Distillery is located here, high above the banks of the Ohio River in a very idyllic setting. Tours of the distillery are free, informative and instructional, and end in a no-cost tasting of your choice of seven different varieties of bourbon products. Don't worry, you will not get inebriated, mainly due the government's restriction on tastings; no more than two to a customer, please! If you are there at the right time (and fortunate enough) you may get to meet and chat with Jimmy Russell, the distillery's Master Distiller who sometimes shows up unexpectedly to chat up the visitors during lulls in his daily activities. And, I can say from firsthand experience, Jimmy is quite the interesting person to have a chat with. Minors (under 21) can participate in the distillery tour but are banned from the tasting room at the conclusion of the tour.
All of Wild Turkey's products and logoed clothing items, as well as bourbon related items such as barrel staves and glassware, are available for purchase.
Several other distilleries are in close proximity and across KY on what is known as the 'Kentucky Bourbon Trail.' Try to take in a couple of them in you are in the area.
