Lawrenceburg, KY (just west of Lexington) is the home of one of the better known bourbon producers in the country. The Wild Turkey Distillery is located here, high above the banks of the Ohio River in a very idyllic setting. Tours of the distillery are free, informative and instructional, and end in a no-cost tasting of your choice of seven different varieties of bourbon products. Don't worry, you will not get inebriated, mainly due the government's restriction on tastings; no more than two to a customer, please! If you are there at the right time (and fortunate enough) you may get to meet and chat with Jimmy Russell, the distillery's Master Distiller who sometimes shows up unexpectedly to chat up the visitors during lulls in his daily activities. And, I can say from firsthand experience, Jimmy is quite the interesting person to have a chat with. Minors (under 21) can participate in the distillery tour but are banned from the tasting room at the conclusion of the tour.

All of Wild Turkey's products and logoed clothing items, as well as bourbon related items such as barrel staves and glassware, are available for purchase.

Several other distilleries are in close proximity and across KY on what is known as the 'Kentucky Bourbon Trail.' Try to take in a couple of them in you are in the area.

Although I'm not personally a huge Wild Turkey fan, the distillery tour is pretty nice. Not too hands on, but you get a good view of most of the action. Free tastings are a plus.

We wanted to visit a distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail and Wild Turkey was convenient and easy to get to. The tour is free and leaves on the hour if I remember correctly. A bus takes you down the street to a complex of buildings while your guide tells you about the history of Wild Turkey. You're dropped off at a building where the actual bourbon is made and watch a short video before going into the room to see the distilling process. We found the tour very interesting and informative. I would highly recommend this distillery if you are looking for something to do in the Louisville/Lexington area.. Oh yes, they pour 8 different Wild Turkey bourbons after the tour. Each person can taste 2 of them. A lot of fun!

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour (given by very friendly and nice Adam) on a beautiful fall day. The scenery around Lawrenceburg alone was worth the trip. The tour was fun & educational and the tasting was excellent (especially the extra American Honey I was given!). Not being able to see bottling was disappointing though. Visiting will be much more thorough and interesting when their new bottling facility is open. Thus, my husband and I rated Makers Mark and Buffalo Trace ahead of Wild Turkey in our tour rankings. Both of those two have much prettier and historic facilities and buildings, as well. Definitely a fun visit though.
