this is way more than just a place to stay. From even months before our trip, John was helping find our family roots/geneology, and helping us plan to make the best experience on Pico. John and Pam extend themselves to be completely at their guests' disposal. We were with a large family group (10 people) and John found extra rooms, arranged transportation, guided our tours, gave us endless ideas of things to do, and even located remote family and set up a meeting with them! John has a wealth of information on the island and its history and culture and is proud to share it. They are also WONDERFUL cooks (and this is coming from a family that thinks our skills in the kitchen are tops), so if John offers to cook-it is well worth the price!! that pig was unbeatable. I can not imagine there is anything better on Pico.

Room Tip: If stairs are not a problem for you, the upstairs rooms got better breezes to keep the rooms cooler...

What a wonderful place this is. We had such a great time staying there for almost a week. The suite Sophia is huge and offers a great view of the coast. We had doplhins and whales almost everytime we looked at the sea. John and Pamela are great hosts - their hospitality could not be better. John has so many stories to tell about the island and its history. The kitchen in the garden is a great place as well is the bench overlooking Sao Joao and the sea. We will come back. Soon.

Room Tip: Take the suite Sophia - fantastic views of the sea from two balconies.

We had a great time exploring Pico while staying with John and Pamela. The house is very nice but the people make the difference. John’s local knowledge and other stories are extensive and he’s glad to share them with you. The owners pride themselves in caring for their guests. The rooms are comfortable and pleasant. You can use the large outdoor kitchen if you wish. (The idea of a complete outdoor kitchen was foreign to us, but makes sense in the temperate Azores climate.)

Visit their web site for more details. When John and Pamela are themselves traveling, Rosairinha and others provide similar personal service to make your stay a success.

I admit that I am guilty of being one of the thousands that only takes from on line reviews and never gives back, EXCEPT now. John & Pam at Miradouro Da Papalva and the brilliant adventures that they facilitated when my family and I were on Pico have inspired me to finally give back. You have no reason to read about anymore guest house options at Pico since the experience at Miradouro Da Papalva would be difficult to exceed. If you are a solo traveler, a couple, or a family they have something for you to make your visit to Pico one to mentally and verbally recall often. The location is outstanding, the accommodations are very comfortable and home like, and if you can persuade John & Pam to barbecue you will be calling home to tell your boss that your flight was unexpectedly delayed several days. John & Pam will just about guarantee that your stay there will be stress free and John will help you coordinate the multitude of activity options available. Be sure to go whale watching with Espaco Talassa, go hiking, go on a historical walking tour with John, eat at O Barbecue restaurant and meet chef John Sullivan, unwind, and try to figure out how you're going to spend more time on Pico at Miradouro Da Papalva.

Room Tip: Ask for one with an ocean view.

What a gem! You can't find a better Guest House! John & Pam are wonderful people. You feel right at home when you meet them. We stayed in the Sophia Room. What a view! Our bedroom and living room had balconies with a great view of the town and the ocean. You are in walking distance to town, close to whale watching and some wonderful swimming areas that have been created many years ago by a volcano.

Can't say enough about John who was raised here. If you want to learn about the Acorean culture you have come to the right place. He is very knowledgeable about the area and can give you guided tours or send you on your way with instructions.

Both John & Pam make some great meals that you can purchase with a day's notice. John is a wizard with spices.

Rooms are well appointed with a coffee pot, microwave and refrigerator. This allows us to have some meals in our room or out on their patio. They also have a BBQ pit for quest to use as well.

We so much enjoyed our stay and we will be back next year. There is "No Stress" at the Guest House. We stayed at the Guest House for 5 nights--June 22-June 26, 2013.

Host John provided great advice and directions as well as a nice room. It was conveniently close to the whaling trips we took out of Lajes. Only a couple of English channels on the cable TV, but a nice DVD library to make up for it. A good value, and charming ambiance. We particularly appreciated John's dining tips.

Room Tip: It doesn't look like it from the map, but Lajes is the best city on Pico to vacation near.

Diane and I stayed at Miradouro da Papalva this May. We had rented a car in Madalena and were planning on letting serendipity take its course when it came to a place to stay for the night. As the afternoon drew near we pulled over at the local coffee shop in Sao Joao to ask where to stay the night - that's when we saw the sign for the guesthouse. We wound up staying for three nights. The room was comfortable and homey, with a great jazuzzi in the bathroom which we used! John, the owner, was very helpful, and recommended a driving tour which led us to the top of one of the many cinder cones on the island for fabulous 360 views, just spectacular. We used the outdoor kitchen facilities to cook breakfast and ate our meal overlooking the blue ocean. They also provide a nice set of binoculars, which are set up on a traditional whaling seat for the purpose of whale spotting. We did see several whale/tour boats and a whale close by. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Miradouro da Papalva, and the amazing island of Pico is a storybook location.
