“Squeezed like sardines”
Reviewed February 23, 2014 via mobile

Bit of a mixed review here. Visited on a Saturday evening with partner for a last min meal. Called at 6:30pm and got a table for 8. Arrived early ane sat in main bar for a drink where tables were free, went through to be seated and were presented with a 2 seater table squeezed between 2 parties that were already dining. We literally were right in their faces. Benifit of the doubt we accepted it was a busy Saturday and happily ordered. The annoying thing here is that we were refused the table in the bar which we here happy to have eaten at, but more annoyed as throughout our meal which we waitied 55 mins for a started and a further 20 for mains is that tables were clearing and we weren't offered to move somewhere more comfortable even though it was clear we were uncomfortable where we were. The only reason I know the timings so well is because it was that loud we couldn't even have a conversation between the two of us.

As for the food I can't really complain, starter of prawns however was a small portion but the fillet steak was more than filling and cooked perfect to our order.

Service was very slack, wasnt sure if a waiter was going to take our order so we ended up ordering at the bar ourselves in confusion.

Would return, but would want to make sure a good sized table with freedom to move was available.

“Don't go if you're hungry and have to wait a long time!”
Reviewed January 29, 2014

Having frequently used this pub for a few years several years ago with my grandparents, we decided to have a Sunday Roast here and was rather disappointed by the level of service we received. We were waiting around an hour from when our table was booked before our order was taken and the price that we paid for the meal that we had was a bit steep. It's a pity and hopefully this was just a one-off occasion that the experience was not so good!

“Good value pub food”
Reviewed October 13, 2013

There is plenty of choice on the menus and during the week they do a 3 course meal with a choice of 3 starters mains and sweets for £10.00. Staff are friendly and we eat here once a week as its good value for money

“Comfortable rooms, disappointing dining room and pub”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

Stayed for 3 nights as we wanted somewhere to stay with a restaurant. Some very glowing trip advisor reports so booked in.
The rooms are in converted barn so separate to the main building, a good size, well furnished and well equipped bathroom. A nice touch with biscuits every day, bottles of water and a towel rail always on so towels nice and warm.
But the dining room. Went in for an evening meal, it is so dark, dismal and uncomfortable. There is an extensive menu plus 3 specials boards with another 15 or so choices. How can anyone produce fresh food with so much choice and when you see the kitchen, which is certainly not fitted up as a catering establishment we were not expecting top class food, and we didn't get it. Boiled prawns, assume to thaw them, were like rubber bands and the lasagne, goodness knows what was in it.
Breakfast was much better though still in this awful room, a bit slapdash in bringing the food in relays but tasty. A nice touch to have morning newspapers to read.
But I will not be recommending this pub to my friends.
As other reviewers have said the welcome is not overwhelming, we didn't know that the tenants were on holiday as no-one introduced themselves. And for the cleaners to be clattering around whilst you are having breakfast is really unacceptable, on the final morning the gentleman who appeared, who turned out to be the landlord started smashing and rattling bottles.

“Customer Care training desperately needed”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

Only dropped in for a drink prior going to the much better pub up the road. Very cold greeting both from staff and the temperature in the pub. The landlady(?) just told the young girl- 'you serve these two & I'll sort out the group.' No welcome or hello. The local white horse bitter was terrible - i left nearly all of it( did not think it was worth complaining!).There are only 2 pubs in the village- don't make the mistake of going to this one
