“Great base for walking, convenient for the train”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2013

We booked the Hotel based on the reviews and weren't disappointed. The service was attentive and happy to help with any minor query, breakfast was excellent. We stayed on the top floor and the only slight complaint was the bathroom was cold.

The Hotel had directions for a short walk round the village which got us in the mood for walking on the evening we arrived. The following morning we bought an OS map at the Post office across the road and set of up the Malvern hills. It is really scenic, accessible and you can adjust the distance to suit. We walked over the top, down the other side and into Malvern. Then caught the train from Malvern one stop back to Colwall which is less than 100 yards from the Hotel. Great for a weekend away.

Thank you for your kind review and we’re glad to enjoyed out food and service. We do all try hard to offer a smiling and efficient response to any guest queries.
The Two Mile walk you mention is a great way of exploring Colwall Village and an introduction to the delights of the Malvern Hills. Having “our own” train station is also ideal, because it’s on the main London to Hereford line, with speedy connections to Ledbury, Malvern or Worcester.

We have been a few times over the years and it is starting to show the need for some updating in places. We were attracted by an overnight stay offer that in reality turned out to be more expensive than some we have had. Our bedroom was clean and tidy with all the features you might expect. Some attention will be needed in the shower in due course - why do so many hotels not give sufficient shelf space in the washing area.?
The food whilst pleasant was not outstanding.
The staff were all friendly and very helpful. The walk around the area that we took was pleasant and allowed us to see the beautiful countryside.

Thank you for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your stay and the walks in the surrounding countryside.
The hotel is over 100 years old so we have a constant program of renovation and maintenance to try and keep everything looking pristine.

We booked the hotel for our biannual walking weekend. We were 9 strong and were helpfully organised into appropriate single and twin rooms. All were clean, tidy and well maintained by helpful staff. There is an excellent bar and the fixed menu was big enough for us to have different choices of excellent food on all three nights. There are two comfortable lounges and tea was willingly served on request. The local walking in the Malvern hills was very good. All the walks are well signposted and the staff were very helpful with advice. The hotel has individuality which gets harder to find in these days of chain hotels.
We agreed the hotel was a excellent find and we will return for another weekending the future.

Thank you for your very kind comments and we are very pleased to enjoyed a relaxing walking weekend. Thankfully the weather was quite clement, as normal in Colwall.
Our food is our biggest draw and we are please that our Head Chef, James Garth, has been with us
For over 10 years and continues to win awards and plaudits for his delicious meals

We look forward to seeing your group back here soon. We’ve got many more walks available in the Malvern Hills and the nearby Cotswolds and Welsh Marches.

Location: The hotel is on road in a village (not as the picture above seems to suggest in a park) with a new build of apartments next door. However, the village is very quiet and there was no road noise from my room overlooking the road.

Rooms - quaint with old style dark wood wardrobes and tea/coffee facilities and quilts/sheets on bed (I prefer duvet covers but that's my preference).

Food - now this was really superb. We had dinner both nights and both times the food was amazing. It's all white tablecloths, candles, fire, huge display of flowers in the centre, lovely and warm, with service second to none. Bread rolls were served warmed in different flavours, good selection of wines, tasty hot food. The only points to add would be to merge the bar and restaurant menu as the bar menu has lamb tangine and fish and chips (thankfully the staff let us opt for that on the second evening) and to have a greater selection of traditional desserts (give me apple crumble any day over jelly champagne)

The bar - cosy, wonderful ambience but the drinks were a bit expensive.

Lounge - there is a lounge upstairs where all the guests piled in to watch the Grand National ordering tea and coffee and biscuits and getting to know each other - it was great fun.

Service - excellent. This felt like a properly run family hotel. I liked the receptionist/bar person Anna as she was particularly efficient.

So well done. This weekend break was unexpectly wonderful because we had such a relaxing time here.

Thank you for your very kind and comprehensive review and we are very pleased to enjoyed a relaxing weekend.
We try to provide comprehensive menus but because everything is freshly cooked to order, and we have both a busy bar and restaurant to serve, it does limit the number of items on each menu. However, we are always pleased to offer both menus to our guests wherever they choose to dine and, with a choice of 18 main courses between them, we think we satisfy most tastes.
Thanks for your kind comment about Anna – just one of our happy, willing and friendly team.
Hope to see you back here again soon.

Went to the Colwall Hotel for a special meal. The steak at £20.00 was terrible. Tough as old boots. This is the second time that I have had a tough steak. We will not be going back again. It is a shame because the Sunday lunch is very good.

You had eaten all the steak before you complained so we couldn't test it ourselves, but we must apologise if you thought the steak if it was tough.
The trouble is you cannot judge how tender a steak will be until you eat it.
We use a local farmer to supply all our Hereford Beef which is normally consistently succulent and tender. He has been unable to comment on the alleged toughness without any evidence to try himself.

We were visiting the Morgan factory in Malvern Link over two days and requested our friends a place for dinner. We liked it so much we ate they both nights. The food and wine exceeded our expectations in quality and price. The restaurant is a bit dull, so we ate each time in the bar. The service and food were great. I can recommend the chicken, ham hock, upside down pineapple and almond flan, and the sardines. Is this really a three star hotel, they have a five star chef!

We had a lovely two night stay in February 2013. The staff are very friendly, just right without being too over fussy. The hotel is clean and warm. The water was hot, the shower good. There is a radiator in the bathroom as well as the bedroom. There was an optional fan heater in the bedroom.
The breakfast couldn't have been better in my opinion, quality food, hot and well cooked. There is a choice for breakfast.
It is a quiet hotel in a lovely setting. Would definately stay there again.
