Called in here after a scary experience in another village pub. The beer was outstanding, the building quirky, the food pleasantly good and the service excellent.

Weird service when we arrived. The menus are on the wall so we had to stand in a corner whilst deciding what to eat. Then order drinks at the bar. we had to ask to be seated at our table and finally start relaxing. The service was nice enough - the staff seemed ok but a little slow. i wasn't keen on the greasy ciabatta with cheese. My pork hotpot was fine but a bit bland. My partners lamb and mash was lovely. Very hearty english winter food. Not much choice of drinks. Only 1 rum. Nice chocolates on sale which we took home. My partner really enjoyed it but i wasn't keen and i wont rush back. There are much better pubs around for better prices.

As we were in the area we made special effort to visit again after excellent food 12 months ago and again were more than happy with the food on a Saturday lunchtime. the fillet of beef was so tender and the unusual chicken and black pudding a great combination. Obviously they have taken note of recent review as plates were really hot!
Useful to have the saleroom of "antiques" to view while waiting.

I found the food less than average served with a poor selection of unseasoned vegetables. Boiled potatoes carrots and broccoli. Plates were cold but warmer than the serving staff.

It ain't fancy but that's part of the attraction. Really good food, very well cooked.

Every time I've been, and I've been quite a few times, it's been consistently good

Highly recommended.
