“Cottage Living”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2013

Having grown up frequenting Kentucky State Park Resorts, it has been nostalgic for this Mom to enrich our two boys' summers with some good old fashioned family fun! We reserved the "newer" Wildwood cottages which are described as a chalet style complete with fireplace, full kitchen (equipped with cookware, flatware, dishes, cups, coffee maker, ice maker/refrigerator and enough cabinet/counter storage) and, in our case, 3 bedrooms/2.5 bath 2 story unit overlooking a wooded area. A perfect sized deck is just off the living room which happens to contain rather dated sofa and chairs. The kitchen table is gigantic - easily accommodating 8 around the circular table. Linens, towels, pillows, blankets (plus extras of each) are provided; housekeeping is not included. A well loved grill is just outside the front door; it is recommended to bring additional outdoor seating if you intend to enjoy the outdoors - definitely do! The symphony of sounds as you are nestled in the woods is a true joy - not to mention the sight of deer frolicking just off the roadway is a delight! The entrance to Lake Cumberland is a winding 5 mile jaunt to the main lodge, Lure Lodge. Here is where folks (I think you have to use this word when describing the folksy experience at this resort!) gather for checkers, greet Betty at the reception desk, enjoy a meal in the dining room overlooking beautiful Lake Cumberland or browse the gift shop. At the lodge you will also find the indoor swimming pool and the game room which contains pool tables, ping pong, foos ball and several arcade games. Activities were scheduled Wednesday-Saturday (wish I had known this ahead of time - calls to activities office earlier in the season indicated there were daily activities scheduled but evidently budget cuts resulted in a shortened activity week). Nonetheless, there are plenty of on and off water activities to keep a family, a couple, an individual as engaged as you wish during your stay at the resort. Getting on the water at State Dock was a breeze - our family had access to a boat but with Lake Cumberland being the "Houseboat Capital of the World", one will not be wanting for boating options! I truly believe you could navigate the waters of Lake Cumberland for years and not truly see or appreciate all the beauties of this lake. Our boys had an incredible time on the water and created many memories!
The scheduled activities were varied and family friendly. Additionally, we chose horseback riding (thanks for a great ride, Jarod with horses Mickey and Rebel!), miniature golfing, hiking, tennis, walking, playing on the playground and can even borrow board games for the touch of rain we happened to have while there.
Outfitting our cottage for the 4 nights we were there, we had stopped at a grocery store and loaded the cooler well before arriving at the lodge. I believe a round trip to the grocery store is about an hour so do plan ahead! There is a country store on site which really does have just about everything, but I appreciated having the comforts of home such as fresh produce and other familiar favorites.
We met lovely people camping at the campground, at the scheduled activities, in the lodge, at the dock and in the water - people truly enjoying the beauty of Kentucky State Parks. Visitors may be interested in the FAQ - Family Adventure Quest program which is operated by the parks system. It is a great way to learn more about the facilities across Kentucky. Definitely look this up :)
I sincerely hope the Kentucky State Park facilities remain a priority for Kentucky - they are a rich tradition in a world which is in such a hurry to hurry up. Lake Cumberland invites you to sit back, enjoy the scenery and be present! I am so pleased we enjoyed a few days' getaway at this Lake Beauty!

Beautiful scenery located on Lake Cumberland. Lodge/ restaurant overlooks the lake. When you eat in the restaurant, try to get a table by the window and you may see raccoons and other wildlife. Rooms are a little dated, but clean and comfortable. Indoor pool is nice, especially in the winter. Outdoor pool, tennis courts, mini golf, camping, horse stables, lots of trails for walking and biking.

Stayed in the older Pumpkin Creek Lodge. Had been here years ago, and used to work at another Ky State Park Lodge; back when the Ky Park System was known as the nation's finest. Well, they sure aren't any more. Really run down, had not been modernized at all. The entire park is run down. Room was tiny, too few pillows, water was off in both lodges due to a water line break (again, no proper upkeep). Supposed to have wifi, but only smart phones would work. No one could get a computer to work on it. The capper was when our A/C went out at 11:30 PM. Kicked on, stopped within 2 seconds and we smelled burning wiring immediately. The front desk clerk did move us to the next room and delivered the key to us, but there was no one onsite to deal with any maintenance issues. We'd planned to stay a second night, but couldn't get out of there fast enough. Spoke to friends who had similar experiences. We did find the staff to be pleasant, but my friends said the staff was extremely rude to them.
Really sad. To go from the nation's finest park system to this. I don't know how they stay in business.

We stayed here on our honeymoon 45 years ago and decided to stay again as a part of our celebration trip. Though the facility is much larger now the beauty of the place was maintained. Our room was comfortable and clean. All the staff were friendly and answered any questions we had. The wait staff in the restaurant were pleasant and made "us yankees" feel at home in the south.

We stayed for a family reunion with a group of about 45 people.

The pros...
If everyone in a large group stays in Lure Lodge...it makes everything pretty easy.

You are right next to the indoor pool (which is a pretty good size and in pretty good shape) and the adjoining game room (pretty much nothing but 3 or 4 arcade games, a ping pong table and a pool table that was out of order).

You are also right next to the dining room. They have 3 buffet meals a day or you can order from the menu. We always got the buffet and I think it cost between $30-$50 for a family of four, depending on the meal. Every meal buffet is so-so...just the basics. It kind of reminded me of a lower-end Shoneys or Frisches buffet. Service was good. We got 45-50 people in and out of there on a Saturday night with no problem.

You are also right next to meeting rooms. Of course, we rented one of those to have a gathering place.

There are several water activities (check website for those) and there is a playground, volleyball net and a frizbee golf course, as well as a couple of pretty good walking/hiking trails...very peaceful with awesome views of the lake.

Cons:
Most of the cons are due to maintenance issues. The resort is clearly run down (hence, I thought it to be just an upgrade from an RV). The ice machines at the end of the walkways have no ice, the rooms clearly show some wear but do have ok beds. The rooms also do not have refrigerators which is problematic considering you are miles away from anything else and MOST OF THE VENDING MACHINES DO NOT WORK...cold water and ice are two things you NEED in the summer. Other little things...hot water doesn't last long, tub doesn't drain, key card slot completely stopped working. Just stuff that should be serviced and maintained that would make a big difference in how much people enjoy the stay.

I think the place is fine but the price is WAY TOO HIGH for the condition of the resort. Everyone is now in the habit of blaming maintenance issues on the recession and state budget problems but for $100 or more a night...this place needs some sprucing up. I sure hope they do invest some money in the place because its surrounding beauty is a sight to behold.

I was there for one night for a professional conference. The park is beautiful, but the staff at the check-in was not very friendly, and seemed bothered by people wanting to check-in. The room I checked into was ok, but the bath tub had a left-over bath soap, which made me wonder if the tub was cleaned after the previous guest. When I wanted to use the water, there was none! I had to call the front desk, only to be told that there was a problem with the water pipe somewhere, and they working on it. This type of thing should have been communicated to the guests and not wait until they go to use the bathroom, and then find out that they do not have any running water. When later, the water came, it was all rusty, of course. I think communication needs a lot of improvement!
Food was ok, if you like country cooking.

What a fantastic state park resort. While its a 5 mile drive from the highway on winding winds, it's worth the wait. The reception area is very nicely and tastefully done with an immediate view of the lake in front of you (in the dining area). The restaurant does not serve alcohol and the food is not as good as at Lake Barkley State Resort in West Kentucky, however, the view and friendly staff make up for it. Although I will note that the receptionist was quite unfriendly and must have been having a bad day. The room was in very good condition and if I was to rate the quiteness of the night it would be excellent - - not a sound, no air conditioners going or any other machine operating (which I had heard all night at Lake Barkley); although when i stayed here on May 6 on a Monday night, there were not a lot of guests. I hear its gets really crowded from Memorial Day on. Towels were soft and plenty, and everything worked! I definitely want to come back to this beautiful piece of Kentucky grandeur!

Room Tip: Get an upstairs room close to the lodge for a full view of the lake. Rooms are generally bright and...
