“Cow Themed”
Review of Swinging Cow Cafe

Swinging Cow Cafe
Description: On Highway 1 north of Kaiwaka, a very long-established cafe and rest stop at the base of the Bryn Derwyn hill pass northbound to Whangarei. Now decorated in a very clean, fun way with a black/white cow theme, the Swinging Cow Cafe has off-street parking for up to 12 vehicles, a play area, clean but basic toilets, an excellent variety of snack foods, and smiling, pleasant service. Prices are very reasonable, and apart from having a rest and eating stop, a wide range of informative leaflets and nice little souvenirs are available, the former free, of course. Most people would stop at Kaiwaka for a break, but those who know this cafe from former years stop here. Oh, and the big Hilltop cafe on top of the pass? It's closed now. Next coffee-and-bun cafe after the Swinging Cow is down in Waipu, a good half hour's drive away.

“Cow Themed”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Great little place to pull into for a quick bite or full meal. Large selection of cooked meals, counter foods (pies, sandwiches, muffins etc). Nice hot coffee and good selection of milkshakes.
Every conceivable thing had a cow theme....quite funny. Lady serving was very friendly and informative too.

“Nice place for a break”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

This place is exactly what you would expect of a roadside cafe/restaurant. We were surprised by the amount of food (ready to order and on display). The burger was tasty and so was the toasted sandwich. It's nothing flash but it is a really nice place for a break when you are on the road.

“Interesting place”
Reviewed March 15, 2013

We stopped for a coffee on our journey from Hamilton to Whangerei. We enjoyed our coffee, although it did take a long time to get our drinks. The place itself is very interesting. The name of the café provides a hint as to its interior design: there are many cow-themed items on display.
