“Nice Stay on the Lake”
Reviewed April 10, 2010

The family headed to Lake Barkley for our Spring Break getaway this year. We stayed two nights at the Lake Barkley State Resort Lodge. The room was clean, beds comfortable, and the view of the lake from our private balcony was spectacular. Since it was early in the season the access to their beach was closed, as was the horseback riding and outdoor pool. We took advantage of the indoor pool, tennis, sauna, and walking trails. The game room was outdated but still fun for our two teens, and they both loved the recreation room across the hall from the game room where they got to hold snakes. The resort is in a very rustic setting which means you'll need to drive into town (10-15 minute drive) to find variety at meal time. We also ended up driving to Wrangler's Camp for horseback riding which our teen girls just adored.

The workers at the Marina were so nice and helpful. We checked into renting a pontoon and the prices were much lower than expected compared to a few other Marina's in the state. Because of the decent rental price, we would absolutely have rented one if it hadn't been so windy that day with the threat of thunderstorms. The fishing was great, too.

Our only negative on our trip was the experience we had eating at the lodge. During lunch one afternoon my husband and I got the soup and salad bar, sat down and began eating only to see with our own eyes that the attendee at the buffet was placing food on it with her bare hands. The next morning we waited over thirty minutes for blueberry pancakes to be served. We felt that ten dollars for four chicken tenders and some fries was a little pricey as well, and ended up driving to town for future meals.

It was a lovely, quiet place and we all had a good time. It is a very nice resort.

We took our family to Lake Barkley State Resort Park at the end of May. It was a nice place. The rooms were clean the views were beautiful. They have a lodge where you can get meals at a reasonable price. They also have a nice outdoor pool. It is very close to the beach as well. They're about a 5 minute drive to the beach.

Resort has great views of the lake from your room which is my favorite thing about the resort. Waking up to that view is wonderful. Comfortable beds, indoor and outdoor pool, game room, walking trails and even a place with snakes to view and HOLD! Great restaurant, inexpensive with a wonderful view of the lake. Only complaint was no discount for multiple night stays but they do take AAA (I think). Hotel is in the middle of nowhere but that is the beauty of it. Will definitely stay again when we go back. Also Marina is very nice.

Lake Barkley State Resort Park was a great choice for our reunion.

Plus's include:
Relaxing place with great views of Lake Barkley.
Rustic lodge with good rooms
Cabins available for those liking more privacy.
Horseback ridng was a blast.
Boat rentals available with pull behind floats.
Activities for kids availables.
Fitness center with in-door pool available.
Nice outdoor pool with panoramic views.
Wildlife in the area include deer, raccoons, turkey

Minus's:
No alcohol served (bring your own - don't bring bottles)
No local alternatives to eat other than the lodge food, which was ok.

If you have a spider phobia, you might not like it here. It is secluded and there are all kinds of wildlife, including spiders here.

I have been to this Lake Resort many of times for a yearly convention that is held there. There are 2 good sized rooms within the main building of the lodge to hold meetings and there is also a convention center with 3 rooms all with removable dividers so there is one large room. The convention center also has a kitchen on site for sit down meals or a buffet style meal.
The rooms in the resort were recently updated within the past few years - new furniture, beds, bedding, air conditioning, and remodeled bathrooms. The room and lodge still have a very rustic feel.
The restaurant in the lodge serves country cooking - fried chicken, Kentucky hot browns, biscuits and gravy, etc. Not the place to be if you're looking for 'diet' food, although there is a salad bar with everything imaginable to put on one's salad.
There is a pool and a dock located right off of the lodge which is great for relaxing or having some fun. There is also a game room with ping pong, pool, and several (but outdated) arcade games which is nice for kids.
Also nice for kids is the lodge holds daily activities to keep the kids entertained - all which are free!
There is also a nice - but needs to be updated - workout room facility with an indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, and steam room.
In the area there is also horse stables, golfing, a shooting range, a beach, a boat marina (with a restaurant). A variety of activities for everyone!

The good: the views are amazing - even if you don't like 'nature' you will appreciate the beauty of this resort and the lake. The staff of the lodge are extremely friendly and helpful - especially those working in the restaurant and Hatti whom is the chef in the convention center (2 of my party are vegetarian and once upon learning this Hatti cooked them their own vegetarian meals every night!). There is also free WIFI everywhere which was nice since there was barely any cell phone reception.

The cons: the cleaning of the rooms. Out of the 3 rooms that my party rented one was fully cleaned, another was halfway cleaned, and one was completely untouched the whole trip which was odd since they were all right in a row. The rooms were also not vacuumed the whole time we were there. The pool towels are great for kids but if you are an adult and plan on laying by the pool bring your own - the pool towels are only 1 ft x 3 ft! And no cell phone reception. No alcohol is sold in the area - it is a "dry" county so bring your own!

All in all its a great place to get away and loose touch with the real world.

If you're in the mood to get away and just read and decompress, the Barkley State Park cottages - about a mile and a half by car from the Barkley Lodge and a longer distance to the Lake Barkley beach - are a good choice. If you need to be on the go with lots of different stimuli, there may be better choices. We stayed in one of the two-bedroom cottages for four days earlier this month, paying $230 a night. We got a bedroom with two double beds, another room with a queen, a fullsize kitchen with all the appliances, living/dining room, and screened-in porch underneath a wonderful, dense canopy of trees. We shopped for groceries in downtown Cadiz, about seven miles away, and cooked out a couple of nights. Very, very quiet. The only unexpected "intrusions" were several persistent raccoons obviously used to being fed regularly by cottage occupants. Be prepared to have to bang on a baking sheet to ward them off if you're outside cooking or enjoying the front porch. The cottages have TV with cable, but no WIFI. There is free WIFI in the Barkley Lodge. The lodge has a couple of outdoor pools, a fitness center, gameroom, rec center where you can check out board games and sign up for fishing groups and other outings, and a pretty lakefront restaurant with standard, unexceptional lodge fare. If you want to sightsee, there's decent antiquiing and junking in Cadiz, and the lakefront and Land Between the Lakes preserve a short distance away. Pattis' 1880s Settlement, a cool retail, restaurant, and amusement development with a fantastic mini golf course built into the side of a wooded hill, is about 40 minutes away at the north end of the Land Between the Lakes. All in all, a nice place, but a little too secluded for my tastes, even though we were in the mood to decompress.

Clean, vaulted rooms. Lake view. Second floor room with a balcony and the best part is that the parking lot is at the same level as the second floor. The first floor is actually a walk down a flight of stairs. Park the car and walk right onto the breezeway on the second floor.

Sat on the balcony for hours and took video of deer, squirrels, multi-colored birds.

It is one of the nicest "hotels" I have ever stayed at and at about $75/night it is by far the best deal for the money. Highest possible recommendation for a relaxing getaway.
