Lake Barkley Lodge
Reviewed October 25, 2012

Our Family stayed here for three days during July of this year and found the overall lodge to be very beautiful. It rained a lot while we were here so we used the lodge as home base and went to other cities and attractions. I would definitely go onto The Land Between the Lakes while staying here. Very scenic and the buffaloes are great for a photo op. Nearby Cadiz is also a great place to visit if one is into antiques.

As far as the lodge, the restaurant has good food especially for breakfast. The lodge pool is very nice and they also have a detached workout facilities with a very nice indoor pool and jacuzzi. The game room was fun and inexpensive.

We found the prices for boat rental to be pretty much outside of our family budget. I thought they would offer choices of different size boats but it is only one type of boat and again pretty expensive.

Downside is that the front desk is horribly slow. There were 3 people up front but only two computers and the worst check in of all the resorts we went to in Kentucky. If one has all of their paperwork in order it will still take 15 minutes or more to get checked in. Without everything in order it was taking well over 45 minutes per family. Totally insane.

The park and lake surrounding the Lake Barkley lodge are just gorgeous. Beautiful surroundings, lots to do and see, but the accommodations are sadly lacking. The rooms are very dark with very dark stained wood and have a faintly musty odor. I felt claustrophobic and spent little time in the room. Everything is in need of some refreshing and most of the facilities are absolutely covered on the outside with bird do and spider webs. A couple of days works for a crew with a power washer could go a long way toward brightening this place up.

Room Tip: Ask to be on the "away" side from the marina for the best views of the lake. The marina re...

The lodge & rooms have been reworked since our last stay. They did a good job fixing things up. Looking forward to coming back. The dining room buffet is good as usual. The bacon is a must. The dock at the lodge and marina have been reworked also. Nice updates.

The good:
1. Courteous and friendly staff overall.
2. Nice architecture, but the niceness leads to some weaknesses. See below.
3. Beautiful view of the lake.
4. Generally speaking, rooms were cozy and comfortable.

The bad:
1. Many gnats in our room. Maybe because we were next to a lake. Don't know...
2. We spotted a whole candy wrapper behind one of the nightstands. If we saw it, wonder how a trained housekeeper didn't see it. Details, details.
3. Many spider webs on outside railings.
4. The one and only elevator wasn't working properly. The inspector needs to look at the door that doesn't reopen when someone walks through the doorway. This could hurt a small child.
5. The food wasn't all that fresh for any meal. Some stuff was too salty. Best part was the oatmeal. Worst meal was the fried chicken with "mashed" potatoes, which seemed like the cook really liked to use pepper. Even the waitress said she didn't like the way it looked and wouldn't eat it herself. She didn't charge me for it. French toast was hard. Also, whether or not they have a buffet depends on the number of guests, so if you go off-season, you don't know if there will be one until you get to the dining area. Kind of understand, but it limits the choices.
6. Some waiters/waitresses gave the impression they just didn't want to be there. During one dinner, a family with a baby came in. Apparently all the staff knew the family because they ALL huddled around the baby for a long time and ignored the customers. The table next to us had to tap the waitress' arm just to get their check. Also heard many "get back to work" comments from the staff itself.
7. Wireless internet was very weak. The desk said they had been having problems with it, but that was it. They didn't say it would be fixed or no idea if/when it would be fixed.
8. Lighting was weak in bathrooms and some common areas, took a while to get bright.
9. One of two phones was dead, couldn't make calls from it.
10. The way the building is set up, if you come from your room, you have to either take a bunch of stairs, or the single elevator, to get to the dining area. VERY inconvenient, especially for disabled individuals.
11. Please do some remodeling to this place. I'm sure when it was built it was beautiful. However, we're in the second decade of the 2000's. Stuff is old and worn out and needs to be replaced.
12. One last thought: DO NOT forget anything, especially if you take meds. There is nothing for at least 10-15 miles.

Coming to this place depends on what you want. If you're looking to get totally away and just stay there and chill, sure, why not. As for us, will not go back. I would call this a "glorified camping trip". If you're looking for a hotel, this is not the place.

My friends and I were supposed to vacation in Gulf Shores but we were evacuated because of Issac. We found Lake Barkley lodge on a google search and decided to give it a try. This was, hands down, one of the most accommodating hotel/lodges I've ever been to. Every one on staff knew who we were and went out of their way to make sure we had a great time. The meals were delicious, the pool was clean and peaceful, and the game room was an added bonus! I would recommend this place for a vacation any time. Not to mention, everything was incredibly affordable. Big thank you to everyone on staff for being so great!

Recently hosted a 4 day event for appx. 150+ people and the staff worked very hard to make our stay go as smoothly as possible. The food was good, service was great and the staff was very helpful in making this a successful event. This was from the Park Manager, Sales staff, Housekeeping and on down to the maintenance personnel doing what was need to make this a successful event. Beautiful views of Lake Barkley and lots of wildlife right on the property brought on many compliments for the location of this event..... very nice place to plan an event!!! Thanks to all on the staff at Lake Barkley State Park...

This used to be a fine lodge. The buffet was fantastic and the rooms were great. It is not that way now. I do not know if the economy has brought this about or if it is a result of poor decisions by our stupid leadership here in Kentucky. We should be putting our best forward with our resorts to entice people to have a better view of us rather than what they see on the Jerry Springer Show. There are decent people in Kentucky and we have nice places. This lodge still has great views and good lake access if you are coming to fish and boat. If you are looking for deluxe accomadations you need to consider driving on to Nashville. Paducah, KY is the next closest town with any accomadations that are what I would call good and better than good. You are in the boon docks at this lodge. There are not hiking trails to really note here and that is disappointing. There is some good terrain that one can hike if you have a compass, map and are good in the woods. Unfortunately, this place has seen better days. We did go there recently to let kids swim in their indoor pool and the heater was broken and the water was like ice. We have not been back since that time because we got tired of being disappointed and thinking how sad it is from its glory days.

Room Tip: get a lake front room....good to have a view because there is little else offered...they cannot clai...
