“Short stop, very impressed!”
Reviewed April 24, 2011

I only visited this resort for half a day while on holiday in Ao Nang. The resort is simply stunning! Beautiful grounds with friendly staff. I actually didn't expect to catch much as I was there for such a short time, but I got 3 fairly big Siamese Carp and lost a few, it was a fantastic experience. I can't wait for an opportunity to visit this place for a longer time.

Any further questions please feel free to message me.

We found Gillhams online as my partners an avid fisherman and were looking for somewhere in Thailand to enjoy a spot during our 2 1/2 week holiday. Boy what a find! We didn’t quite know what to expect but read the good reviews and hoped for the best. We spent but 2 nights / 2 days, and any expectations we may have had were met and certainly exceeded.

We were picked up from our Aonang Beach (Krabi) hotel at 8am sharp as arranged, by the resorts Thai driver Ban (this was complimentary, as with transfer back to the airport on day of departure) who knew enough English to greet us well and to explain the local plantations and surrounding country side as we travelled. Happy and well humoured, who from the word go, represented a professional friendly and down to earth next 2 days.

Gillhams is run by Father Stuart, Son Sean, Daughter Becky and respective partners. All chip in on a daily basis to meet guests needs, whether it’s serving in the restaurant or at the bar, clearing your table, resort maintenance, administration or as a fishing guide. Further staff are friendly and kind, including the cleaners (who readily smile and do not mind waiting to clean your room) gardener or porters.

My other half had a fabulous 2 full days fishing with english guide who stayed by his side from first thing in the morning (7 am fishing starts) right through to 8pm at night to help with bait, rigs and catching the biggest fish of type we have ever seen, including a 40kg Mekong Catfish and 6 others (Black Pacu, Amazon Red Tail Catfish, Siamese Carp, Ripsaw or Niger Catfish). He was so enthused, it was easily arranged for him to spend another 3 hours fishing before we were to leave on the day we were to depart!

For fabulous fishing unique and all it’s own, featuring record species from around the world we would definitely recommend making a trip to Gillhams either on your own or with family for a day fishing pass or as a stay, as it simply is a fantastic experience backed up by wonderful staff. With limited number of guests, the resort remains quiet and intimate to thoroughly enjoy your fishing or relaxation for the rest of the family.

They cater for the experienced angler while help is at hand for those unsure having never fished before or very little.

The fishing ‘guides’ are just that. They help set you up, keep you going and support your monster fish catches. We had a fabulous fellow called Scott who did all he could to make my partners 2 days the best.

For children and non fishing partners, the resort offers peace and quiet. You can spend your day at leisure, spending time the way you want. They offer all day breakfast so your not confined to a regular 6 - 10 am meal time per other hotels, which allows sleep in's till any time of day! Heaven if your travel itinerary meant early rises like ours did!

Breakfast is included with accommodation and is personally chosen from a large set menu of both thai and western dishes including the obligatory ‘big breakie’ of sausage, bacon, 2 eggs, baked beans, hash brown, 2 slices of toast, freshly perked coffee, tea or juice. Breakfast, lunch or snacks throughout the day may also be delivered to your bungalow, fishing spot or by the pool (no room service charge or hefty meal prices!). Lunch can be taken at any time up to 3pm and dinner from 6 – 9.30 (which allows those who would like to sit down as a family, or to join other guests after a days fishing ends at 8 pm).

Cost of drinks and meals are reasonable and current to what other restaurants are charging throughout Thailand. Expect on average 150 - 250 Baht for a large entree/snack or main dish with lots of english options available including homemade beef burgers and chips, steak and chops (for slightly more) which suited our 16 year old which he absolutely loved, especially after trying so much food during our travels. All meals were excellent and we were surprised at the selection, quality and size of dishes. My chicken pad thai was delicious and bettered other pad thai I had eaten elsewhere.

Bungalows are exceptionally well maintained and thoroughly clean. Don’t expect 5 star amenities (hairdryers, lotions, baths) but do expect comfortable and clean. Towels are plentiful and changed daily if needed, they honestly smell fresh - like home washed and line dried. We came from a hotel that skimped on the coffee and tea, and as big tea drinkers (refreshing in the heat) it was heaven to see a well supplied bowl of both, with sugar and dried milk sachets. Mini fridges with complimentary bottles of water replenished every day, kettle, electronic safe, cupboard with coat hangers (not 3 or 4 but more), mirrored dressing table area, tissues, soap, even a torch! A split system air conditioner keeps the room wonderfully cool (and is quiet) along with a ceiling fan to circulate. A comfortable queen bed (and comfy pillows!) with floor to ceiling windows let the panorama in, and was wonderful to have an afternoon siesta with curtains open, to look at the view. The bathroom was large with open shower (no curtain as space enough to bathe without getting everything wet), basin, shelf, mirror and wc, doors can be locked for privacy.

Each room has the option to extend to a connecting second bedroom with 2 single beds, another fridge, kettle, cupboard with safe, mirrored dresser, split system air con and fan which suits the kids or if travelling with another couple. It was great after 2 weeks with our son in the same room, to have a little privacy with 2nd bedroom.

Bungalows as mentioned are cleaned daily at a time that suits the guest. They seem to come to your room while your away either during lunch or late afternoon whilst your in the pool or walking around the lake if you happen to stay in.

A pool which gets blissfully warm, perfect at any time of day, to escape the heat. There’s a more shallow section for parents to hold their toddlers in and is not too deep for older kids. Wide seats run the length of the pool, to comfortably sit in the water and admire the view. They also have an outdoor shower and toilet alongside, along with thatched day beds to lounge in or long plastic recliners. A 30 second walk from your bungalow.

Guests can walk around the resort including the perimeter of the lake on both sides. On dusk and at night you will see brilliant fireflies, frogs and geckos, with the occasional small dragon lizard running across the lawns during the day time. The local fauna offered us something we had not seen in our other accommodations or travel which also made Gillhams special.

They have a store to purchase basics including large bottles of water, carnation milk (great in tea or coffee while in Thailand mixed with supplied dried milk sachets), noodles, biscuits, insect repellent, sunscreen, other fishing supplies, at normal Thai prices.

You pay for your snacks, drinks or meals other than your breakfast, and tip your fishing guide for the length of your stay, if you choose. Gillhams support their guides with accommodation, meals and consumables but guests tip their guide (your choice) at the end of your stay for their service. We weren’t aware of this prior to arrival, but were more than happy to tip our guide for all he did for us.

All monster fish at Gillhams are catch and release, well cared for and doctored to keep fish healthy, allowing future guests to take advantage of the lakes growing stock.

All in all we loved our Gillhams experience. For the last 2 nights / 2 and a half days of our holiday it was perfectly placed, as both myself and my son truly relaxed for the first time, we swam, slept, walked and ate while my partner revelled in his fishing. The Gillham family remains down to earth, welcome and friendly. The immediate scenery is both calming and brilliant, changing throughout the day due weather conditions. The resorts gardens are lovely. Don’t hesitate to stay .. it’s certainly different to your normal hotel or resort. Intimate, unique, quiet and just a tad special because of it!

We went to Gillhams for only one week, and left wishing we went for one month!

A world class fishing destination with world class fish! Had everything we could have wished for for both a fisher and non-fisher!

Menu is good quality and not overpriced.

Would definatly reccomend and will definitly be visiting again for longer next time!

This place is both a world class fishing resort and an ideal base to explore Thailand and its fantastic Islands.

The resort is run by the Stuart Gillam and his family and it's plain to see that Stuart has created something very special.

Our party arrived at Krabi airport and was met by Stuart himself who was very welcoming and we then made our way to the resort in Stuarts own high quality transport.

On arrival we were shown to our rooms to drop our things off and then all met in the bar for a well needed drink.

At this stage it was dark and it was not untill the following morning that we awoke to find ourselves in the most beautiful of settings " A TRUE PARADISE "

Our party spent ten days here and had a fantastic time with both the fishing and also sight seeing.

I would recommend this place to both the angler and family alike.

One of the few places in this world that the fisherman can take his family and all will be happy.

Gillhams is a one of those travel "treasues" you come across very occasionaly. It is not your touristy, on the beach hotel and we were thankful for that. It is a little bit of heaven nestled in fantastic scenery, very private yet very casual. You get to know all the other guests by first name, nothing is too much trouble, the accomodation is perfect, lush gardens, pool, lake views. Although set up to entice anglers from around the world you don't have to fish but you will find it hard to resist giving it a go. Food is great. Gillhams is like being at your friends home - so relaxed. Our other travelling companions booked to stay on the beach in a hotel at Au Nang but enjoyed being with us at Gillhams. We hired a car for our week stay or the resort can take you where you want to go. The owner, Stuart, and his staff are so easy going - it was a very pleasurable stay and most highly recommended.

My husband had pre-booked a day’s fishing on line at the Gillhams Fishing resort on Krabi island as, as part of our holiday to Thailand we were to be staying in the Krabi Resort which is close by. (see separate review for Krabi Resort). I myself am not interested in fishing but decided to accompany him anyway (there is no charge for visitors who do not fish). Stuart, who owns the resort built it from scratch six years ago and it really is a beautiful place. A lot of hard work and thought has gone into the design of the place and although we didn’t see inside the bungalows where you sleep if you book to stay at the resort, they looked very spacious and were set amid beautifully manicured lawns and exotic plants, shrubs and trees. The place is very tranquil and the lake is absolutely huge with “swims “ featured all along each side. There is also a swimming pool which although not huge was more than adequate and spotlessly clean. The restaurant and bar area is open sided with cooling fans in the ceiling. The menu is very extensive and both the lunch and dinner we had there were absolutely delicious. You can have liver and bacon with mash (which my husband did), a variety of burgers, steak & kidney pie or pudding just to mention a few. There is also a selection of Thai and Indian dishes, I tried the yellow noodles with prawns which was to die for. I also saw several full English breakfasts being served, which again looked absolutely yummy ad all freshly cooked to order.

Stuart’s wife collected us from our hotel at around 7.15 and we made the short 15 minute journey to the resort. Two rods were already set up for Jerry (my husband) and a huge bucket of ground bait and a pot of dead bait was provided at his “swim”. There are small structures at each “swim” providing shelter from the sun. Once all the ground bait was used, another bowl was provided and the same with the dead bait (this is included in the price). Personal rods are not allowed. Apparently they have several world record fish in the lake and the photos adorning the walls of the restaurant go some way to proving this. I am no expert on fish but an Arapaima in one of the pictures looked like the Loch Ness Monster and indeed took three men to hold it.

Stuart, his son Sean and Scott (better known as Bruce !!) took very good care of us all day long, one or other of them were constantly checking to see everything was alright and asking whether we needed drinks, food or bait or just any general help. At the time we were there, they were full up and every swim was taken. I had a dip in the pool in the afternoon which was lovely and very refreshing and Stuart even offered me his own bungalow to change in as we were not staying at the resort.

Jerry was getting a bit despondent by around 6pm as he had not caught anything and as it was getting dark, I decided to sit in the restaurant where I could read. Stuart had told Jerry he could fish until 8pm if he wished (he didn’t need asking twice). Finally at around 7.45 Sean came tearing through the restaurant headed for Jerry’s swim saying “he’s got a fish, he’s got a fish”, my book got flung aside as I followed in hot pursuit with the camera. After what seemed like an age the fish was landed, a beautiful Siamese Carp (pics attached). Not, by far, one of the biggest in the lake, indeed as Sean/Scott said – “ a tiddler” but nevertheless Jerry was an extremely happy bunny. I have to say the fish are treated with kid gloves, so to speak, they are never kept out of the water for too long and everything possible is done to prevent causing unnecessary distress to them. I wish Jerry had caught one of the monster Arapaima and I know Stuart, Sean and Scott were all hoping the same, as well as Jerry but it was not to be, and a Siamese Carp is better than nothing. After a lovely dinner with coffee and brandies to follow, Sean drove us back to our hotel.

I am sure if we return to Thailand we will definitely go back to Gillhams and I would recommend anyone who is interested in fishing to check out the website www.gillhamsfishingresorts.com
and if going to Thailand be sure to book a day’s fishing. I have attached several pictures but in all honesty they really do not do the place justice.

I would be pleased to answer any questions but anything technical to do with fish I will have to pass to Jerry !
