This was our first stop on our Bourbon Trail tour. We haven't taken a distillery tour until this one. The Bourbon Heritage center is very nice. We were greeted warmly as soon as we walked in. As we waited for our tour to begin we strolled through the lobby to look over all of the pictures and historical items on the walls. It was interesting and kept us occupied until our tour started. Restrooms were right there to use before the tour started which was nice.

The tour started in a nice, large theater room to view a 7 minute or so movie on the history of bourbon and Heaven Hill. After that our tour guide took us on a short walk across the road to one of their rick houses. Our guide was well informed and the tour included an easy walk through the warehouse where he showed us a few of the tools used, a sniff directly from a barrel, and how the barrels are marked. Next we headed back to the Heritage center where our guide showed us a few more pieces of bourbon history. Then we were escorted into a private tasting room. We were able to sit at the bar as our guide explained the two different types of bourbon we would be tasting. They also went the extra length in explaining the art of smells. We had two tubes that we opened to practice smelling notes of certain spices and herbs before trying it with our bourbon. It was a lot of fun to experience that and use it to identify the different notes in our glass of bourbons. Then we were offered a bourbon ball that was absolutely delicious.

Not only can you take the distillery tour, but they have a trolley that can take visitors on tours as well. It would have been something I would have loved to do if we'd had the time. We really enjoyed the Heaven Hill Bourbon Heritage Center.

My husband and I took the Heaven Hills trolley tour when we first arrived in Bardstown. It did a great job of showing us where the attractions are located and a little history behind them. The driver suggested we take the Heaven Hill tour and bourbon tasting and we are very happy we took her suggestion. The welcome center is very nice and the tour guide was well-informed. We loved walking through the buildings where the barrels of bourbon are stored and learning about the behind-the-scene details. The bourbon tasting was fun and relaxing. Best of all, the tour and tasting are free!

I'm not a bourbon drinker at all but enjoyed the tour. We saw an interesting tour of Heaven Hill. The walking tour into the barrel storage building was very interesting and incredibly aromatic.

Ending the tour with a smell and taste test of two Bourbons was also enlightening with just three drops of water. Learn something new every day.

If you are taking the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, this is a must stop. If not, you could pass on this one. The center is nice and very modern. You get to watch a very nice movie about Evan Williams and Elijah Craig, as well as all the brands that Heaven Hill produces. However, you do not see any production. That is done in Louisville. That is a bit of a disappointment. The tasting room is one of the nicer ones and makes the visit pleasant.

Having completed the Kentucky Bourbon Trail I now feel well armed to discuss and give my opinion of the 6 distilleries that are currently on the trail. (As well as one that is no longer on the trail but I went there anyway) Heaven hill has a very nice visitors center but that really is about it. Back in the late '90s Heaven hill had a fire that pretty much leveled the place. It wiped out something like 7 warehouses as well as their distillery building. Do to this tragedy all Heaven Hill bourbon is now made off site in Louisville KY. On this tour you get a short film, then a walk across the street to the aging warehouse, then a walk back to the tasting room. This is the part where bourbon lovers may actually feel as if in heaven. This is by far the most comfortable and well thought out tasting room and expierience of any of the distillery tours. The room is shaped like a giant bourbon barrel. In the center of the barrel is a large circular bar. Once you complete the tour you take a stool at the bar (unlike most distilleries where you are fighting for space at their tasting bar, Heaven Hill limits their tour numbers to the number of stools at the bar, so you are guaranteed a seat ) and they place two vials, a caraffe of water, and two glasses in front of you. The vials are filled with scented cotton to open up and arouse your sense of smell to greater appreciate the two different bourbons in the two glasses. The water is to either cut the bourbon or clense the pallet. One of my favorite bourbons was discovered in this tasting room. After your bourbon you get a chocolate bourbon ball as well. Our tour guide was a gem as well... do you remember as a kid when your grandmother would yell at you? I was having flashbacks... no, I wasn't misbehaving or anything however that is just the tone she had. You better agree that her bourbon was the best... or else! I would visit this place again for the tasting room, but I might try to skip the tour part. Hopefully one day they will repair the distillery here and there will be more to see.
