“A small slice of paradise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2014

Rumah Mertua a charming little place with friendly and helpful staff. The room we had a verandah overlooking the pool and garden, great way to start the day with breakfast on the verandah, listening to the birds and have a slow start. Food reasonably priced and delicious. Loved the local cakes that were served on arrival. Our driver 'Use' knowledgable of local sights and good places to eat.

Room Tip: have a room with the verandah

This small charming hotel felt like home every time we returned to it. The staff were exceptionally friendly and attentive and helped us with language, train bookings and general advice. They were simply fun to enjoy a conversation with. The dining room was the real surprise. The room itself opens out onto the verdant courtyard and one can always hear the fountains and relax in the shaded veranda. The wait staff, especially Supir, was helpful and ever courteous. And the food coming out of that small kitchen was excellent. We ate at the hotel at least twice a day because of the value and genuine home cooked taste. Have the rjistafel, it was excellent. Our room which was behind the pool (very relaxing) had its own patio with comfortable seating. The room itself was simply but tastefully furnished. We had a problem with the AC leaking but when we mentioned it to the staff, it was fixed immediately before we returned from lunch. The hotel is definitely not in the center of town but it is only a 45,000rpi taxi ride to the palace and when you are coming from the airport, you shouldn't have to pay more than 65,000rpi.

The hotel is O.K and has beautiful garden and swimming pool setting. The Dining room and breakfast service from the staff is very good. The bed in standard and family room are hard.
They do not have enough blankets. Deluxe Room has better view. It is rather hard to get early check in / out. Location is not good.

Room Tip: Bring your own blankets and they have very hard bed

Rumah Mertua was a perfect choice for our family of parents and 2 children, 6 and 10. We went out most days for a sightseeing trip but also wanted a nice space to hang around in too. The Rumah Mertua was definitely this, with its lovely pool and garden space. Especially at dusk when the boys would play and we could relax after a busy day with a Bintang and watch them. :) Sometimes we would stay for dinner too or we'd go out again to restaurants and easily arranged taxi rides could be organised by the staff in the reception.

The rooms are simple and comfortable. (we had 1 and 2, There is some noise from reception and the restaurant at times as it is a very popular place but only from guests- not staff, who are very quiet and considerate at all times. If you are worried about noise and mostly A LOT of smoke smell from some guests as if may annoy you? We put the air con on at these times and this sort of drowned out noise and smells. (this is not staff making the noise and it depended day to day if it was bad, so you cannot really blame the hotel as it is acceptable in Indonesia to smoke everywhere.)

The food was really great and the breakfasts plentiful and yummy. The price is so reasonable that the popularity of this guest house is sure to continue if added to the the service which is excellent and the setting and look of the place which is very nice in a the Indo/Colonial style.

I also had a couple of massages from the friendly masseuse they employ and they were lovely and reasonably priced. The room onsite is very pretty and peacefully located at the back.

In short if I went back to Yogyakarta I would only stay if in the back sections. We had enquired but as we wanted to two rooms next to each other for such a long stay (7 nights) they could not accommodate us at the back.

Otherwise, 10 out of 10!

Room Tip: rooms 1, 2 and 3 have some noise from the reception and/or restaurant and also the kitchen?? If you...

I stayed 1 night in a standard room (last one available) from Agoda for less than US$40 including breakfast for 2. Note to self: next time, stay 2 nights in a pool-facing deluxe room.

Rumah Mertua is located on the outskirts of busy Jogja city. It's a peaceful green haven, and I'd recommend that you end your holiday in Jogja here to recover and relax. I don't find it too far from the main area of Jogja, i.e. Malioboro so beware of drivers who may take advantage by claiming that it's distant. For reference, cycling from Rumah Mertua to Malioboro took me 40mins and I'm not the very fit sort.

Proximity to airport averages 20mins. We made it there in 40mins in rain, traffic jam and flooded roads.

Free Wi-Fi all around hotel area. Decent speed.
Free usage of bicycles, win!

Javanese body massage was relaxing. Rp400k for 2, 90mins each. I think it's important to remember that Javanese massages aren't meant to be pain-invoking, unlike Thai.

Swimming pool looked inviting, unfortunately we didn't get a chance to use it.

Our room was okay, decent for the price. The plus points are the gardens and common areas. Very soothing to the eyes.

Breakfast comes with fruits, coffee/tea, juice, a couple pieces of kuih (snacks) and choose your main (pancakes, nasi goreng etc). Lovely. For lunch I had nasi goreng Rumah Mertua. Portion is big! Delicious but if you're Asian, be sure to ask them to cook your food with chili padi, else you'd find it bland.

Staff are friendly, pleasant, very helpful, prompt and speak good English.

Tip: If you prefer shower gel, bring your own when staying in Jogja. I stayed in 3 different hotels and all provided only soap bars.

Conclusion: Relaxing stay. Will be back!

Room Tip: Go for the pool-facing deluxe rooms

Excellent service. Reach here at 3am on a Thursday and staff lets us check in immediately. The location is far from city and Malioboro which is the only bummer for this hotel. Other than that, the place is really nice and beautiful and when we had breakfast by the pool it is really peaceful. I will definitely come back to this place, it is so cosy and it really feels like an escape. Away from the city. You can read by the garden and just sit by the pool, it is really nice. Perfect for honeymooners.

Full of pleasantries. Food is clearly indo n that is gd enough. Every meal almost accompanied by some "kueh", sort of snack. Surroundings are gardeny-like, feels like home. Only downer is the so called spa massage. The therapists skill are at best marginal, just go thru the motion. Else a total quaintful experience.
