“Nice Property With Questionable Staff”
Reviewed March 11, 2013

This hotel had what you look for in a place to stay. The room was clean and we felt safe there. Yes the room was small but it was comfortable and quiet. And it was a very interesting building with that great Western United States historic vibe to it. Much more interesting than staying at any chain hotel.

But checking in was a very bizarre experience. We walked in and went to the front desk where we find a guy sitting at a desk behind a computer who just stared at us. No hello, welcome, or I'll be right with you, just stared. So I asked do you have a room. He replied "yes" and nothing else. We had to pry the privilege of staying at the hotel and he never got up from behind the computer which is about 10 feet from the counter. He even had us read our credit card number out load to him from there. It was just bizarre, so much so that it really took away from what might have otherwise been a great experience at a quaint well kept hotel.

Room Tip: Ask to see a room before committing as some are very small and some are spacious.

Checked in last night expecting a nice room, dinner, bar etc! None of the above!!! Check in was a struggle for them! Charged our CC for the night right away without asking if we wanted to pay cash or credit. Then found out they had a Christmas party planned so the bar and dining area were closed to the public. I understand that, but was not made aware of it when making the reservation four days prior. (Wilson is limited to dining areas)

Our room we booked was a jacuzzi suite, it did have a jacuzzi but the room was so small and had 6 1/2' ceilings. Hallways were dark, room didn't have much light. Pillows were horrible! The room we had was on the third floor.

The couple that went with us had a king room on the second floor and was a lot nicer. Still don't think I would ever go back to this place! First impression was horrible with the staff, etc.

Dining area is in the main check in area so when they are having parties you have sift your way around the party group to go in and out of hotel entrance!

The food did smell exceptional that they served for the christmas party! Just wished they would have been open up front and made us aware of the party.

I did notice someone said all the rooms were full that was a lie. There was probably 3 or 4 rooms being used on the 7th.

Room Tip: Ask questions about dining, bar etc. Also let them know up front if you want to pay cash otherwise t...

The prime rib was very tender. Our Christmas party was there. I had never been there before. Great atmosphere. The people working there love this place. They are ready to show it off. Every room was booked for the night. We did not stay as all were from a 60 mile radius. Sometimes it is nice to appreciate a historical location. No, it is not like a new modern hotel or diner. If you want something new and boring, don't come here.

Room Tip: We did not sleep there but the rooms are a step back to grand railroading days.

It is a nice restored hotel with huge potential but nobody seemed to care! To begin with there was no one at the front desk. We had to wait 15 minutes to check in and then we were not given the rooms we had been promised. The rooms were very small but clean. We went down stairs to have dinner at 8:30 pm. Only young people working and could have cared less to wait on us and the only people in there were locals (they got all the attention, including lots of free drinks). We finally ordered hamburgers and it took and hour and a half to get our meals and never got a refill of our drinks. The service was horrible. Thank goodness we slept pretty good. The continental breakfast was minuscule . Everyone had to keep asking for refills of the few things that were available. Again no adults in charge! The staff acted as if they did not want to help anyone. At check out there was no one at the desk. I do not know who owns this hotel but they need to have at least one adult in charge and hopefully give good service!

Room Tip: Check to see if they have any suites otherwise they are very small.

Our first floor room was small but very clean and nicely appointed. The staff was helpful and pleasant. We enjoyed dinner in the basement Sample Room. It is close to the train track as it is a RR hotel so trains can be heard. The sound did not bother us. The hotel provided a change of scenery from the interstate and hotel chains at every exit. Reading the history of the hotel provided insight into this community.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel if you think the train noise will bother you.

First of all, you must understand that this is a restored turn of the century, 20th century that is, hotel. The rooms are a little small, based on today's standards, especially when you put queen size beds in them.

We stayed in one of the Queen size suites. Our room was basically divided into 3 sections. When you first come in the door, you are in a sitting room with a futon, builtin writing desk with the TV above it. It also had a sink at the end with a mirrored cabinet above. The next area was the bath with toilet and shower (no tub or sink). The shower flow was good. The third section was the bedroom with a queen size bed, night stand with phone, and a second sink with a mirrored cabinet above. The two sinks in separate rooms were convenient for the two of us.

The renovation was amazing, including air conditioning throughout the hotel, which is a necessity in the KS summers.

If you like staying in restored vintage hotels, the Midland Railroad Hotel would be a great choice.

I made reservations for two nights on 9-18-12, upon checking in at the front desk I found they had already charged my credit card for the whole two night stay. At check-in I told the lady behind the counter that I might be staying only one night. After the first night there was no way I was spending another night. Noisy, you could here people talking until after midnight like they were in the same room. Towels were thin, cheep and raggedy. There was no coffee pot in the room and at the mercy of kitchen person to make made some. The morning continental breakfast was a joke. I checked out at 7:15 am and asked for credit on my card and was told that she would have to give it yo the manager.Three weeks later still no credit!!! If this old crikey hotel experienced a renovation of more than than the $250,000 that is was supposedly purchased for, it would be a major shock. Reading about the Hotel on the internet and its restaurant sounded really great. After arriving I was told the restaurant was only open on Sundays and told that the Tavern in the basement was all there was. town is about 26 there I waited until they opened and went down and had a beer and checked out the very abbreviated menu. I order the 12 oz. Kansas City strip that the waiter had told me that was her very favorite thing on the menu. I ordered it medium well, with a salad and the vegetable of the day. Now realizing we're in the basement and the kitchen is on the first floor. There had to be trip upstairs for butter, extra salad dressing, ketchup and etc.. When this fine "grass fed strip" finally showed up (without a steak knife), it looked very peculiar. The waitress said they had run out of the $18.99 12oz steaks and cooked two 6 oz steaks and stacked them on top of each other. Each being only 3/8 of an inch thick, they (both) were well done, and so tough you couldn't tear then apart (no steak knife, they were probably up stairs I guess). I ate one bit and pushed the stuff away. When the waitress asked me how it was, I told her I had ordered a 12oz steak and got two 6 oz steaks, medium rare and got more than well done and the bake potato (in lieu of a vegetable ?). No butter and sour cream (upstairs?). I asked for a refund and she told me she wasn't authorized to do so. I left the place and found a really great cafe one block over. And got one of the best steaks that I have eaten, along with home made pies. I'm not sure what type of hotels the other people that are in love with place are accustom, but this is not it. joe@handpranch.com
