“Tuscan charm”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 17, 2012

My wife and I stayed in a superior room in mid May, 2012. The room and grounds were very nice. Breakfast was limited and not set up for a North American palate. Supper was OK, expensive for what you get, but....welcome to Italy. If your are looking for a peaceful place to stay, this is it. I would return anytime.

Room Tip: Ask for a superior room. They are spacious even by North American standards.

I was looking for a place to stay in Tuscany that would give me an authetic tuscan experience. This definitely gives you this. It is exactly what you would image a villa in Tuscany to look like...beautiful place. The restaurant was fabulous. Friendly and helpful staff. They arranged a private tour and tasting at a local vineyard for us. The only thing I would say is that this place is definitely off the beaten path. My husband and I were planning on exploring Tuscany and all the little towns and this place was a little too remote for this agena. In retrospect, we should have stayed in one of the towns like Montalcino or Volterra. That being said..if I was looking for a getaway with less exploring, I would definitely stay here again!

We returned for our second time to Tenuta di Ricavo in October and this time brought extra family with us. It was this time everything we promised them it would be. It is a beautiful place with caring proprietors and staff, good food, and fabulously located for travel all over Tuscany. Go...you won't be disappointed!

Room Tip: Tell Christina about yourselves and trust her to choose for you.

We booked this inn for our 50th birthdays and 19th wedding anniversary and could not have loved it more. Not only did we get upgraded (no charge) to a superior room with a great balcony, but got special treatment throughout our stay (or maybe they are that nice to everyone!). Even fresh flowers in the room. The food was great- we ate 2 dinners on site. The property was so relaxing and close to visit other places (with their helpful maps). The people at Tenuta could not have been more helpful, especially Christina (owner) and Daniella. it was a great 4-night start to a 2-week Italy vacation!

I planned a 4-week Italy trip just for two to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday. I booked Tenuta di Ricavo for 4 nights as our base for exploring the Tuscan countryside because I wanted a quiet & comfortable retreat. We loved everything about it!
The property is actually a wonderful little hamlet with several small buildings that make up the 'hotel' & run by the granddaughter of the original owner. This makes it a real retreat away from it all. Yes, it does mean driving on an unpaved country road to reach here...but it's so worth it.
Although I had booked a classic double room, we were pleasantly surprised to find that we had been upgraded to a superior room with a separate small living area & an amazing view of the countryside from our bedroom window. It was relaxing to return here after driving a full day from town to town. We slept so peacefully...
The breakfast buffet is one of the best we had in terms of quality & variety. We sampled many different qualities of breakfast foods typically served on hotel buffets in our 4 weeks in Italy. Tenuta di Ricavo offered higher quality products than any other place we stayed at. My husband was reluctant to leave there because they served a different delicious fresh fruit 'cake' & excellent quality prosciutto & salami every morning..not to mention warm croissants & crusty breads as well as hot 3-minute soft-cooked eggs.
We had dinner in the hotel restaurant 2 nights--the evening we arrived & the evening before we left. Although we did this for the convenience, we enjoyed the tasty pasta dishes & yummy desserts(we are not heavy meat-eaters).
Christina, the owner, & Daniella, at the hotel desk, were always there to help us with mapping driving directions, restaurant recommendations & reservations, & friendly advice. We encountered a problem with the polizia because our Avis rental car did not have the current insurance posted. Christina helped us by calling the company to explain the problem & got Avis to ensure they would pay if we got a ticket or if the car was impounded. She is truly a gracious hostess who looks after her guests every need & even waits on tables at the restaurant.
We would love to return someday to Tenuta di Ricavo with family & friends & stay for a week or more.

Room Tip: The superior room above the reception room was quiet & had a great view of the countryside from...

We stayed in the Tenuta di Ricavo for 4 nights late September. We did find it idyllic and very atmospheric. It was an excellent base for touring around the local area. The service is friendly and efficient, the owner amazingly enthusiastic and very helpful in advising on ideas for local tourism. Breakfast is an excellent buffet, we had dinner on 3 occasions in the hotel, there is daily menu as well as an a la carte to choose from. For us, the food was not the highlight of the hotel, it is good but variable. Despite this, the hotel is charming and well worth going back to.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a terrace in the summer

We loved our stay at Tenuta di Ricavo. The property is charming and serene, and the staff was extremely helpful, both on property and helping us with recommendations for cooking classes, wine / olive oil tastings, and other excursions off property.
We took the trip as a "babymoon" and it was the perfect ambiance for our get-away.
Would highly, highly recommend it!
