My wife and I booked a room at the Brooks Motel in Norton KS for the night of July 13th, 2012. As I have a sister and brother-in-law in Norton, we have stayed at this motel many times in the last 30 years, dating back to when the motel was under the Best Western sign. Although the motel is clean on the outside and the parking lot is well lit at night, we found the room we occupied in poor condition. The young laady that checked us in, was very courteous and seemed knowledgable. We payed for the room and got the room key at 2:00 p.m. We left to go have lunch and didn't even go into the room at this time. Looking back, I wish that we had. We returned to the motel at 5:15 p.m. to drop off the luggage, turn on the a/c and shower. As soon as we turned the a/c on , we noticed abnormal noise coming from it. the noise was not extremeley loud and we thought that either it would quiet down, or we could stand it for one night. After showering, the noise in the a/c was still noticable. I asked my wife if we should ask for another room, or to ask for a refund. She said as we had already used the room, she didn't think we could get a refund, and we didn't have time to make changes...My wife and I booked a room at the Brooks Motel in Norton KS for the night of July 13th, 2012. After showering, the noise in the a/c was still noticable. I asked my wife if we should ask for another room, or to ask for a refund. She said as we had already used the room, she didn't think we could get a refund, and we didn't have time to make changes as we needed to meet relatives for dinner. After returning from dinner at 10:30 p.m. we prepared for bed. I turned down the sheets on my bed and found strands of hair between the sheets. The sheets them selves appeared clean, but in my mind I questioned whether the bedding had been washed. We went to bed. At 4:15 a.m.,I was awakened by something crawling on my body. Due to the locall and time of year, I assumed that it was possibly a miller mother. I made the choice to brush it if off and drop back to sleep. Unfortunately the insect in question had other ideas and by 6:00 a.m. I could no longer sleep. I rose from bed to find a roach type insect, on his back, dying in the area of the wash basin. Not sure if this was the one that was in my bed. Subsequent searching in the room revealed 3 live large beetle type insects, dying and 7 other smaller dead insects.
All in all, we found (1)the entry door fitting loosely, showing poor weather stripping top, sides and bottom, (2) the dead bolt lock inoperative, (3) light fixture inoperative, we might have found more bus if the room had been well lit, (4) general poor house keeping practices (5) bath room door would not close, (6) matresses larger than the box springs, and the insect issue. (7) dated, beat up chest of drawers, missing pulls. *In my sixty years I have never seen a motel room in such bad condition, *(8) a/c noise and poor performance. I spent about and hour going thru our clothing, luggage and food to make sure we fould bring any inects home. We went to the office to check out and asked to speak to the manager about the issue. The clerk on duty did not seem to understand English and the manager spoke broken English. We told the manager about all the problems, emphasizing the bug issue. He listened courteously, and made notes about the problems, but offered no solutions. I told him that I wanted a full refund, he offered 10% refund, I said that was not acceptable, he then offered 20% refund. I again said that was not acceptable. He said that was the best he could do. I said it looks that we could not come to an agreement, not accepting any refund, but vowing to never do business in the motel again. I will be contacting the city of Norton to let them know about the motel. Staying at either other motel in Norton would have been preferable to our experience. Staying at the Sleep Inn would have cost almost twice as much but it would have been worth it.More
