“Take the kids here to run around”

After shopping in Lindsborg all afternoon, my kids were bored so I took them out to Coronado Heights. The drive is fun because you can see the castle on a hill getting closer and closer as you drive through the flat land, and there is a winding road around the hill to get to the top. My kids had a blast climbing all over the castle and then running around all of the trails. There are also picnic tables up there, so it would be fun to take lunch up (but the bathrooms aren't that great, so go before the trip!). You could also grab a book and enjoy some peace and quiet while the kids run themselves out on the hilltop for free!

This was really an afterthought as we were bored and looking for things to do. We drove out there, and while it was a little eerie, we had fun exploring. You can actually climb the stairs to the top and look around. Kids could play here for hours...adult not so much but it was interesting.

If you enjoy history, this place is a good stop. There is a little housing unit that looks like a small castle from when the WPA stayed here. There are great views from the top and several wildflowers bloom in the spring. You can see how flat Kansas is from up here. There is some evidence that Coronado quit his search for the cities of gold after seeing the view from the top.

From the top of the "castle" there is a wonderful 360 degree view of the Smokey Hills and farm land. This would be a great picnic spot - the WPA workers built tables inside the building and also along the side of the hill. There is an restroom, but it's a pit toilet (no sink) - so bring your own TP and sanitizer.

A friend and I visited here after spending some time at the Maxwell Wildlife Refuge. It would be a fun place to take a picnic and just relax enjoying the views. It's pretty cool to be able to see such great distances since Kansas is generally so flat. We had read there is a bike trail nearby and brought our bikes, but we were unable to locate any bike trail. It should be more clearly marked.
