We reserved two rooms for our family for a one night stay over Christmas break to attend a KU basketball game. I feel inclined to mention the reservation process became complicated on my end when I had multiple questions choosing the rooms for our family. Since there were no adjoining rooms, Ariel was extremely patient and professional answering all my questions and describing the various options available to meet our requirements. I later had to cancel one of the rooms due to a family member’s illness (there is a 48 hour cancellation policy) and then re-reserve the room when he was able to accompany us on the trip. Because we were unable to check in prior to the game, I anticipated a delay with the valet car service. This was not the case. Even though there were several cars in queue, the attendants were hustling and getting everyone taken care of promptly. There is a KU gift shop and a Starbucks coffee bar in the lobby. Check in was efficient and we were soon on our way up to the rooms. The gentleman checking us in did provide an answer to my question regarding dining in the Bird Dog Bar & Grill, but did fail to mention that the kitchen at the Bird Dog Bar & Grill closed soon at 10 pm. Although we walked in after that time, the manager promptly seated us and casually informed of that issue. We were able to enjoy our meal without any consequence but easily could have arrived at the Bird Dog as soon as we dropped our bags in the rooms.

The hotel itself is beautiful! As a born and raised Kansan, I have full appreciation for not only the natural beauty but also the history represented by the limestone. The hotel is just a few years old and is still in excellent condition. The finishes were high quality and reflected an overall luxurious atmosphere. It had a unique castle feel yet was cozy and warm. Our rooms were enormous with high ceilings and high end finishes. The entry into the room is tiled past the bathroom up to the main room area where the carpet begins. It was as if new. One of the rooms had a wonderfully comfy king bed with a sitting area opposite the foot end of the bed with a queen sofa sleeper, two granite topped end tables and a matching coffee table. The flat screen TV was mounted on the wall so that it could be viewed from the bed or the sofa. This room had an entire wall of floor to ceiling windows and French doors that opened onto a huge limestone terrace. On the terrace there was a heavy wrought iron table and seating for a ten or so. The room on the other side of the terrace also opened out onto the terrace and would be perfect for two couples traveling together. Our view was of the neighborhood since we were on the second floor, but nice just the same. Our second room was on the opposite side of the hallway and had a view of neighborhood apartments and the nearby KU football stadium. There was a mini fridge installed into cabinetry that extended the length of the TV wall and also had a nice desk chair available. A separate built-in granite topped cabinetry that also had a small sink was located against the remaining wall. I even noticed a white noise machine on either side of the bed and ear plugs on the bedside table. We didn't hear a sound but that may vary on other nights. The lighting and ceiling fan was unique and also enhanced the atmosphere. The two ceiling fans were contemporary, silent and effective in the large space. There was a small safe in the room. I had read on TA that electrical outlets were possibly an issue and had taken a multiple outlet power strip along. This maneuver allowed the outlets to become available without getting down on all fours to reach under the bedside table. This is one area that does seem lacking, but was easily overcome by this simple technique. Thank you TA. The bathroom was very large and included a huge soaking tub and a separate shower.

The other room we had was a bit different in that the sitting area with sleeper sofa was separated from the king bedroom with a wall and archway. Even though there was no door it was beneficial in adding privacy. This room did not have the tub but the shower was even larger than the first room. Both rooms were very clean and in great repair.

We dined at the hotel for breakfast. As you enter the area toward the Five 21 restaurant, you place your order at the counter and then, once seated, are served by the staff. The food was very good at both the Bird Dog and the Five 21 breakfast area. Check-out was easy and our car was returned, and our bags loaded by the friendly valet attendant in a timely fashion. We will definitely plan on staying at the Oread again when in the Lawrence area.

Room Tip: Higher room for better view. The terrace was very nice and would be even more so in warm weather.

Thank you for staying with us and for taking your time to write a review. We truly appreciate your feedback. We are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us at The Oread and that Ariel was able to easily help you re-reserve your room.

I apologize that you were not told about the hours for our kitchen, but am glad that one of our restaurant managers was still able to help you dine at the Bird Dog Bar. I hope you enjoyed your meals at both the Bird Dog & Five 21.

Thank you again for your feedback. I have noted that we need to increase the number of electrical outlets in our rooms, and plan to look into it when we update our rooms.

Looking forward to seeing you back at The Oread soon!

Best,
The Oread Staff

My wife and I stayed at the Oread in order to attend a KU basketball game (very convenient location--we took a hotel shuttle to the game). The hotel is amazing--while relatively new, it has the charm and look of a historic property, with plenty of amenities. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, and the staff was knowledgeable and attentive (Steve is an execellent bartender at the BIrd Dog). The food at the Bird Dog was great, as was the pizza downstairs. Would definitely stay there again and would highly recommend it to anyone.

The hotel is beautiful and the room extremely comfortable. We were treated very well by all staff. Had breakfast at hotel restaurant and it was very good. I would definitely stay here if I happen to be in the area again.

Our daughter goes to KU and we have had the good fortune of staying at The Oread a few times. The hotel is absolutely beautiful! While the hotel is relatively new, it has an old world, cozy lodge-feel to it; however, it provides every modern amenity you can possibly think of. The stone work is gorgeous! The rooms are extremely spacious and luxurious. There are beautiful granite coutertops everywhere -- the shower stall is even decked out in granite! There are several restaurants located within the hotel, so you have many options without even stepping foot outside! The service is always impeccable! There is a Jayhawk Bookstore gift shop located inside which is very convenient. The proximity to the University of Kansas campus is perfect! The staff is friendly and accommodating -- always taking that extra step to make sure their guests are satisfied. Their room rates are on the higher side -- especially on game days, but it is a great way to spoil yourself! When we bring family and friends up to see our daughter, we always say, "You have to stay at The Oread at least once!" However, once you stay there once, you never want to stay anywhere else ever again!

Stayed here to see the KU - K-State game. Go Wildcats. The hotel is beautiful. They only have valet parking which at $20 per day is a little higher on game day and high for Lawrence in general. The rates also are higher of course on game days same as in Manhattan so its not a surprise. I loved the all of the stonework inside and out. It almost seems like a old castle like building but it was new construction and they did a great job with it. There are several dining options on site including a fine dining restaurant Five 21, the bird dog lobby bar also serves food and breakfast in the morning. In addition there is a pizza place and a Jimmy Johns on site. The Starbucks available in the lobby was great but i do wish they would provide coffee in the room. The ear plugs were a nice touch for game weekends.

I loved the views from the top (Nest on 9th). They have great panoramic views of Lawrence. You can also dine on the Terraces on 5th if the weather was nice but it was too cold when I was there. There is also a branch of the KU bookstore as their gift shop great if you are a KU fan. The Cave was a great collection of bars and clubs with a large dance club and a nice wine bar and other smaller bars also. Though the crowd is primarily college students still a fun place though it gets a bit loud.

The staff was very attentive and wonderful. The valet service was great though a bit slow as the hotel was full while I was there. The rooms themselves were nice but could have been a little better decorated in my opinion as they seemed a bit spartan but the beds were comfortable and overall I loved the hotel. It was in a great location right accross the street from the stadium and KU campus. While I love the Eldridge and all of its history and location on Mass. I think this is probably the nicest hotel in Lawrence.
