“perfect for the jayhawk community!”
Reviewed March 25, 2012

This is a little gem on the KU campus . Decor is warm , friendly and stylish . The hotel is loaded with amenities for a boutique hotel and downtown Lawrence is just a short walk away. This is a perfect local for those visiting the campus for the first time as well as returning Jayhawks. Rooms may be a little noisy during football or basketball season but all rooms are equipped with noise machines, ear plugs & privacy blinds. Best hotel in Lawrence!

My husband and I stayed at The Oread and loved it! The room we stayed in was very clean, comfortable, and modern. Unlike many other hotels, the decor and atmosphere of the hotel lived up to the photos on its website.

The bed was incredibly comfortable with high thread count sheets, great pillows, and cozy blankets.

The bar on the main floor is a very popular spot for local sports fans and the hotel has a wide variety of other lively activities right in the building. But not to worry; the hotel management thought ahead to include a sound machine and earplugs in each room! We didn't end up needing them but we thought it was a great gesture.

Overall, we found our stay at The Oread very enjoyable!

I've been traveling to Lawrence for 30+ years and have tried many of the hotels and motels in town over the years; since The Oread opened it's been my favorite place to stay. But keep in mind the bar for hotel / motel quality in Lawrence is pretty low -- I've always been surprised, and a little depressed, that the local lodgings are as dismal as they are for such a nice college town. If you try to save money, you're likely to end up in a very tired motel next to a room of partying college students; if you stay in one of the 3 or 4 nicer places in town you're likely to wonder why they can't quite pull their act together.

There are two really good things about the Oread - the location, a great spot right on the edge of the KU campus; and the service, which I've found to be friendly and efficient.

There are some really odd things about the Oread, too. First, the design -- the rock exterior surfaces are spectacular, and seem to be to be an attempt to echo some of the historic buildings in town. But as an architectural statement, it's a mess. It's like a little boy's dream of a castle + skyline-dominating over-ornamented wedding cake + small-town wretched excess. Inside, it seems very "male;" kind of like a hotel designed by someone who was inspired to turn a sports bar into a hotel. There was some obvious money spent on parts of the hotel, but also some strange touches:
- They put the cheapest and nastiest elevators in the hotel that they could find. It always seems odd to walk from a fairly nice lobby into an elevator with hard, plastic surfaces that would seem more at home in a freight elevator.
- The sports bar in the lobby has an odd way of spilling into the trafficways of the hotel; if you turn left from the reception desk to go to your room, you end up walking through the sports bar.
- The rooms have these odd solid-wood shutters on them; the windows are either closed or open to the light; there are no shades or curtains to block out the light.
- The room configurations are odd -- in the bigger rooms, there is a ton of wasted space.
- Lots of harsh surfaces and bland furniture and colors.

The overall impression is of a hotel pulled together by amateurs who had never designed a hotel before; whenever I stay I find myself secretly wishing they'd spent a little less money on some of the gimmicky exterior ornamentation and hired an experienced hotel designer to pull this together.

Now the real downside -- this place can be noisy at night. Not just from the clubs, but also the parties in the hotel that the management doesn't seem to want to control. Instead of controlling the noise, they now put earplugs in the rooms with a note commenting on the "vibrant nightlife that is ever present near the KU campus" and inviting guests to use the complementary earplugs to get a good night's sleep.

To me, that says: screw you if there's a party in the room next door, pop in some ear plugs and tough it out.

Still, I'll be back - the location, the service, and the lousy set of local competitors means I'll likely continue to return.

Thanks for the ear plugs, anyway.

I am very pleased you feel the location and service is friendly and efficient. My staff does a great job!

To address some of your items:

We have KONE elevators in our hotel. It is one of the most environmentally sound elevator concepts in the industry. Based on KONE EcoDisc technology, it incorporates KONE’s commitment to deliver solutions that use less energy and recycle as many products and components as possible.

Yes Bird Dog Bar is right by the check in area, but we wanted the lobby to have a vibrant, exciting feel when guests are in the hotel. On the way to the elevators, you walk by the Bird Dog Bar but not in the bar. Our food is wonderful!

When we opened, we had shades in all the rooms. We listened to our guests who said the shades did not block out the light and added the shutters which have worked beautifully!

The hotel rooms are very modern and do have granite in every room. This was a personal choice of our owners and we have found that some absolutely love the modern rooms, and some prefer a more traditional feel. (Which they can receive at our sister property The Eldridge in downtown, Lawrence)

We have ear plugs in both of our hotels as an added amenities. We did not put them in because of parties in rooms. We know that outside noise, especially downtown, can be loud and we decided to place them in both hotels. The comments from our guests have been very positive.

Thank you for being our guest at The Oread and we look forward to your return!

What a cool facitlity!!! My niece is one of the event planners for the Oread and when we visited in December we were given a personal tour of all the facility. We will be attending a wedding there in 2014 and are really exicited to stay - it really is a "castle". The staff that we met were so professional, yet young and full of energy and great ideas!

We stayed at The Oread after attending a KU Basketball game. It was awesome to stay on campus within walking distance of Allen Fieldhouse. However, the hotel does offer a shuttle to the game. Also they have valet parking when parking on campus can be difficult. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were beautiful and the shower in the bathroom reminded us of the showers in all-inclusive Mexican resorts. We had a great time and would love to stay here again.

This hotel is beautiful inside and out. Lots of flatscreen TV's in the bars and a great one in the room. Service is outstanding as well. We had out kids and they had a great time. Don't stay anywhere else in Lawrence. My wife and I frequently use The Oread as a getaway place. Highly Recommend!

My son is a freshman at KU and we ate in the Oread's Bird Dog restaurant on our first visit. Really impressed by the staff and decided to stay there upon next visit. Great decision. Rooms spacious, extremely clean, free wi-fi. I liked the stone and wood decor throughout.. Lobby is beautiful.. Go have drink at the outside Terrace bar.. Great location in the campus near student union , and overlooking football stadium.. Has the Bird Dog, good micro brews inside, a Jimmy Johns and other amenities within. Close to Mass Ave, which has everything..Our third visit to KU and this is best of three hotels we've statyed..
