Stopped here on the way back from a western vacation trip. Trusting the good reviews, I called and was pleasantly surprised at the reasonable cost, and pleased when I arrived and saw a nice , clean, well-maintained hotel. Everyone was friendly, and the beds were comfortable (though I'm not a fan of the tiny pillows, but there were four per bed, so I made it work.) The breakfast was good, and advertised as "continental", but it did have a waffle maker, and biscuits and sausage gravy (really good gravy, as it turned out), and was well-attended. The coffee in the room was some of the best I've had in-room (Wolfgang Puck branded.)

The only thing I didn't like, and it was design, was that the bathroom door swings way too close to the toilet, so you have to do a little dance to close it behind you, and the sink is not accessible with the door open, which is a little inconvenient. If I'd done the rooms, I'd have made the closet smaller, moved the entry to the corner of the room, and extended the bathroom to make it longer (and moved the smaller closet to the inside.) But, what's done is done, and if that's my only gripe, it was a successful stay. I wouldn't take a whole star off, as this is a design flaw, not a reflection of the great job the staff of this property is doing.

Room Tip: There are no elevators, so if you have difficulty with stairs, you'll want a first floor room...

I and my family fairly late on Sunday night, June 29. The desk manager that night was super-helpful. We'd requested a roll-away. She apologized it wasn't set up in advance, but once I asked about it she went right to work. By the time I'd parked and finished bringing in our bags she had the room well arranged and the extra bed nicely set. She also helped me when Internet Explorer wouldn't load the required Wi-Fi sign up page. She taught me to use chrome for that, a trick I've used elsewhere since. The morning staff was also very helpful. I saw some helping guests with their bags when they needed it.

The hotel itself is nice, clean and well kept up. It is located on the end of current developed areas, so our room on the west side had a nice quiet "wooded" area out the window (the outdoor pool is also bordered by those woods. For our family of four to have it to ourselves most of the time was one of the best hotel pool experiences we've had.

Room Tip: The back, I think west side, of the hotel is the one that borders the undeveloped area.

If you are a railroad enthusiast, you will love the Quality Inn Near Ft. Riley. You will have the excitement of REAL trains blasting though, complete with full horns, just behind the hotel several times a day, including 10:20 pm and 4:30 am. For those of us who really would like to sleep, however, this makes the Quality Inn less than ideal.

The property itself is well-above average for a budget hotel. The place is clean, well maintained, and well-appointed. The lack of an elevator could present problems for some, so be sure to request a ground-floor room if you have issues. The rooms are fairly spacious and feature microwaves and refrigerators, as well as REAL wooden hangars--not those damn things you have to thread in a metal loop.

Two BIG problems exist: The four throw pillow on the bed are atrocious. The look great, but for practical use are awful. The worst offense is the bathroom. I have seen small bathrooms before, but this one became my worst enemy after the third night. To shut the door, you must climb in the tub, or squeeze up against the wall between the toilet and the vanity, There is no running in for a glass of water without inventing new dance moves. Brushing the teeth and washing the hands became chores I dreaded due to the door blocking the sink. For a one-night stay, this won't be an issue, but for a two-week stay, it was a real problem.

Other quibbles, no outlets on the small desks, a the proximity of the desk to the wall, the usual lousy "High-speed" internet, and no other seating availability in the room. Breakfast was pretty basic--hard-boiled eggs, instant oatmeal, two sugared cereals, biscuits and gravy and a waffle maker (however, kudos for the bread, though you have to flip it to toast both ends.)

The few staffers we encountered were good, with one standout. Courtney is at the front desk six nights a week and is a rock star. I was going through the tasty Wolfgang Puck coffee at a pretty good clip, so asked for more, and had extras every single day. That is a little detail which I don't think I would get at many other properties, and shows genuine attention to guests needs. We also found towels were provided for guests using the pool and workout room, which is something I didn't expect at a lower-mid tier hotel.

The bottom line: This is a pretty nice budget property in a pretty awful location--though I have heard the train racket is an issue at the other hotels in town as well, so this problem isn't limited to the Quality Inn. If you are tired enough, or a sound sleeper, you could do a lot worse. Just map out your bathroom use in advance.

Room Tip: Avoid anything near the ice machine or main stairs.

Dear Guest,

I would first like to thank the Northrop Grumman Group for their 12 room, 12 night stay with us. We truly appreciate your business and also appreciate your feedback. Your comments are vital in helping us to deliver exceptional service and accommodations to our guests.

There were several inconveniences we would like to apologize for, including the difficulty you experienced with the bathroom and the bed pillows, as well as the issue of the trains. Unfortunately the train tracks do run through a majority of Junction City and as you pointed out, the disturbance is not limited to just our property.

We would also like to thank you for your kind words regarding our clean and spacious rooms and room amenities, and the praises you gave our staff service, especially in regards to our Guest Service Agent, Courtney. I will definitely be passing along the compliments and again want to thank you for sharing.

As a Gold Award Winning hotel, we strive to do our very best at providing clean and comfortable accommodations for our guests. We appreciate your business and hope that our outstanding facility and exceptional staff service will bring you back to our hotel. We hope your endeavors while in the Junction City/Fort Riley area went well, and hope to see you again in the near future.

Definitely good choice, especially value for Choice Hotels reward night. Room was comfortable and clean; only the rugs in the hallway and some linoleum on our floor (3rd) needed more cleaning, vacuuming. Breakfast choices were good and what you'd expect for a continental breakfast.

Moderately clean. One of only a couple places in town with an outdoor pool which is nice during stampede weekend. Close to liquor store and Walmart. Free breakfast comes with the regular stuff and room is reasonably priced. I stay here each time I'm in town.

Everyone was so nice and welcoming. Courtney was so friendly and gave us great suggestions of places to eat and how to get to certain places. I was staying there graduation weekend and felt like I was celebrating with family. The hotel was clean and quiet and the breakfast in the morning was great too. Definitely will stay here again when I come back to Kansas!
