Owner description: Travel 650 feet underground into an active salt mine! Experience a cool and soothing subterranean world formed by salt deposits in the Permian Sea long ago. See the raw mine as it was left more than 50 years ago on the Salt Mine Express train ride and catch a guided tour on a tram to the Dark Ride. You won't want to miss a special gallery filled with authentic movie costumes and memorabilia. NEW in June is the SAFARI SHUTTLE! Add a one hour guided tour to your underground adventure and go BEYOND STRATACA. See salt formations not available to the general public until now! Limited capacity -- only 12 visitors at a time depart 3-4 times a day.

“Great lil' Kansas gem!”

I was born and raised in Wichita and it took me 34 years to make it to this museum. My husband and I planned a day trip to both the Salt Museum and Cosmosphere...believe it or not - I enjoyed the Salt Museum more! When you plan for this trip -- they do assign you to a specific time that you will take the elevator down to the salt mine -- limited space on each tour. The tour and tram ride is wonderful...and at the end, before heading back to the elevator, everyone gets to pick a piece of mined salt to take with them.

“Great fun”

One of a kind attraction. The mine is 650 feet down. A lot of history on how salt mining has changed over the years. There are many Holywood props from prominent movies on display. The temperature is a constant 68 degrees. The ride down is in an elevator in total darkness. All ages will enjoy this opportunity.

“Interesting and Educational”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2012

You're not likely to see anything like this anywhere else--education about geology and salt mining wrapped up in a very interesting package. After a short inservice on safety, the tour group went down the elevator to the mine area 650 feet below ground--the museum truly is all underground in a mined-out area. The museum is far from the active part of the mine so there is no noise or machinery in use--very quiet, but not a creepy, oppressive quiet. Once underground, you're allowed to disperse and take as much time as you want at the exhibits and can go "on top" whenever it fits your schedule, which was a very nice feature of the tour.

If you are clautrophobic, don't bother. However this is an awesome place to go and see how they mine salt and see how they keep important items safe underground. I recommend it!

“History and Science all in one!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

This is a very nice way to spend an hour and a half. Going down the distance of a 65 story building to a large cavernous area. You go through safety orientation of a few minutes, don a hard hat, and an emergency breathing apparatus on your shoulder, you then go down 650'. A mixture of geology and engineering displays leads you to the area where some film is stored as well as some Hollywood costumes, Personally I would bypass the train ride but do add the Dark Tour. There are rascal scooters and wheelchairs available as well.
