If you are clautrophobic, don't bother. However this is an awesome place to go and see how they mine salt and see how they keep important items safe underground. I recommend it!

“History and Science all in one!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2012

This is a very nice way to spend an hour and a half. Going down the distance of a 65 story building to a large cavernous area. You go through safety orientation of a few minutes, don a hard hat, and an emergency breathing apparatus on your shoulder, you then go down 650'. A mixture of geology and engineering displays leads you to the area where some film is stored as well as some Hollywood costumes, Personally I would bypass the train ride but do add the Dark Tour. There are rascal scooters and wheelchairs available as well.

“Very Interesting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 16, 2012

Despite having grown up in Kansas, I did not know that the salt mines existed in Kansas. The Kansas Underground Salt Museum was extremely interesting and very educational. You get to learn about the salt mining process (mine is still an active mine), but you also get to see the history of the mine including equipment used. It is also shared with the Underground Vaults & Storage company; so, you even get to see historic artifacts and Hollywood memorabilia.

I went by myself on this trip; however, I will be returning with grandkids. I think it is something that they, and others as well, need to see.

be sure to take a jacket if you go. Take the train ride and explore the storage vaults. Lots of old stuff left in the mine over the years.

Did not know there was so much Hollywood history stored in Kansas. The caverns are big and it was educational. You get to pick out your own hunk of salt! If you have claustrophobia this is probably not for you.
