“Must go!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2014 via mobile

This place is the place to go when coming to Dordogne. The food, the place and the people are just fabulous. Make sure you book in advance the place is small and they get easilly fully booked.

“Good food, great view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2014

This restaurant is perhaps more adventurous than the nearby Le Roi Carotte although both have their attractions. The blackboard with its frequently changing menu is brought to your table and you choose, mix and match, from the €27 and €35 cartes. For entree I chose duck pate topped with a slice of pate de foie gras accompanied by crisp vegetables. Simple and memorable. The main course of duck (breast and wing) cooked in two fashions came with creamy polenta and vegetables. Dessert was a small pot of creme brulee. The hosts/owners are friendly and charming and accommodated my avoidance of gluten by bringing a dish of apricots and strawberries instead of a madeleine with the dessert.
One of the great features of this restaurant is the view from the terrace, which overlooks the river Dordogne. Wonderful in the evening. You need to book.

“Gets better and better and better”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 20, 2014

Visited last year and pleased to return. Maître d', chef's wife and waiter provide a most pleasant front of house staff. Good English, engaging manner and warm humour. Recommendations offered and accepted, options of switching between menus "no problem".

Ambience enchanting on this warm June lunchtime. Views over river, herons, kites and calling frogs enriching the magic.

Prawn starter unusual with black batter but delicious nevertheless and the pate and foie gras starter was a safe, nevertheless delicious way to go. All 3 of us went for the steak with foie gras and were taken by the simplicity of presentation coupled with the complexity of flavours and outstanding local wine as recommended by maître d'. Desserts awesome - I was far too taken with my petit creme brûlée to pay any attention to the others who were similarly preoccupied with their desserts. Must return.

“Entante Cordiale with French Dressing”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 14, 2014

We had been in the Dordogne area of France for a couple of weeks, mainly self catering. However, for the last few days of our holiday we were joined by friends and decided to try one of the local restaurants. After some deliberation (and driving around) we came across La Gabarre restaurant situated on the bank of the river with amazing views and plenty of parking. We immediately booked and two days later duly arrived for our meal.
We were met by the wife of the chef (they are joint owners) and were given a choice of eating upstairs or down. We opted for down and although there were currently no other diners were told that it was fully booked. Soon diners, both French and British duly arrived and the host made sure a friendly atmosphere ensued.
The choice of food was small which was of no consequence as we could have eaten any of the dishes and the choice of wine was extensive and all chosen by the chef's wife. The waiter spoke perfect English and also understood the British sense of humour.
Meals and wine were ordered and the first courses soon arrived. My sardine dish was excellent and my three fellow diners all commented similarly. We had mains of sea bass, fillet steak and Guinea fowl each delicious in their own way and especially when washed down with a bottle of rose. For desert most of us chose a meringue covered in cream and strawberries. French patisserie is still the best!
To summarise, the staff were attentive, knowledgeable and fun, the food could not be faulted and the ambience was homely. The bill arrived and the cost was about £40 per head.
A gastronomic experience which is in our memories whenever we think of the beautiful Dordogne region. It well deserves its entry in the Michelin Guide.

“A Must-Visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2013

This restaurant is an absolute gem. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the food is exquisite, the atmosphere homey. We ate here two successive nights with friends and were delighted to find different menus on each night, each of which was outstanding. We celebrated our anniversary on one of the nights and were treated to singing in our honor from the other tables, which says a lot about the place. I can't recommend it highly enough..
