Akagera is a must once you are in Rwanda. The lodge is the only affordable accommodation in the park, although rates differ. It is big and lacks a local touch. The great view on the lake is not properly made use of.The recently renovated rooms are not an improvement. Small, even the tiny balcony without furniture. No natural ventilation, although nights are cool and fresh. Does not really make a good sleep. Imported building materials and standard furniture make a standard hotel room that could be anywhere in the world. Food is very good, as is service in the huge restaurant with Chinese budget furniture. All in all very acceptable as long as you do not compare to Kenya and Tanzania, where both prices and quality of experience are defintely higher

Dear Nico:

Thank you for posting a review of your stay at Akagera Game Lodge.

As you no doubt noticed we are in the process of a refurbishment. The restaurant will be refurbished in October, and new furniture has been ordered ( this includes furniture for all the balconies and terraces.

We hope you will visit again when the refurbishment is complete .

We had a wonderful time at the game lodge. The staff were helpful and friendly. The rooms were very comfortable and immaculate. The bathroom and shower was great. The food at breakfast and dinner was delicious and there was a massive choice. The desserts were in some cases to die for and most unusual by Rwandan standards.
It was a shame that the pool was closed for renovation. There was a small play area for kids which was in need of repair but still usable. There were games to borrow from reception which was a nice touch. They put up a very comfortable put you up bed for my toddler daughter in our room that was low to the floor in case she rolled out!
The only real concern I had was that the website had advised that we didn't need mosquito nets because the rooms were meant to be sealed and in fact there were no hooks in the room even if we had wanted to. However there were several mosquitos in our room on arrival and I spent some time hunting as many down as I could. There were more the next night too. So I would say take your own net if you are concerned, and a way of hanging it. The doors opened to the outside, there is no hallway and I saw that doors were left open by staff when cleaning etc. so I think mosquitoes in rooms are going to be inevitable.
But overall we had a wonderful stay and I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

Dear Laura:

Thank you for posting a review of your stay at Akagera Game Lodge.

We supply mosquito machines in the rooms , which should eliminate those that have entered through the door..
We are awaiting the arrival of pop up mosquito nets , which will be far more effective in the standard rooms ( especially for the children) than the traditional nets.

We hope you visit us again soon.

While I had visited Akagera Park probably four times before I have never stayed overnight on site. This was always something I have wanted to do. Since this could be my last time in Rwanda I didn’t want to miss this experience. I was not disappointed as it was a great experience to share with friends who come to help support a vocational school. These accommodations were quite a contrast from our usual ones while in Rwanda helping with the school and one we won’t forget. It is like an perfect oasis in the jungle. While seeing the gorillas would be great our group was not probably able to manage that physically and this experience was ideal for all ages and abilities. Loved it. Don’t miss it!

The location of the lodge is super. Nice views on the lakes. rooms are good. You have the pay park fees ,so if you plan to go just for lunch , your hamburger will be an expensive one . Wine @ US$ from 75 to 110 also very expensive. R1000 -1500 per bottle.
Gravel roads in the park are in bad shape especial the smaller roads .

Dear Jan en Aly:

Thank you for posting a review of your stay at Akagera Game Lodge.

In terms of our wine prices - the majority of our wines range from $30 to $50. As all wines are imported , you may have noticed during your stay in Rwanda , that these prices are very similar to those of restaurants and hotels throughout Rwanda.

We hope you visit again soon.

Hotel is being remodeled and the new rooms are extremely nice. Food again is buffet for breakfast and dinner so not very good. Lunch if you are there is order from menu and huge and good. Bring your own water bottles to refill instead of purchasing plastic bottles of water.
