The lodge is set in a beautiful location overlooking the game park and has a nice pool area. The hotel is very run down - expect to run out of water, have wobbly toilets, cracked bathtubs and no mosquito nets. The bedroom itself is not too bad. Everything is clean although old.

The food is not very good and the service is slow albeit pleasant.

For one night it's not a bad place for US 100/room (sharing). It's somewhere that you can rest quickly but where you are not going to linger.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the second floor for a little more privacy.

Like other reviewers noted, the place is rundown and needs a remodel badly. My room initially did not have any hot water, but we told the staff and they turned it on and then it was fine. The flow was quite good and the drain worked. We experienced intermittent power outages all night. Only one other party were at the lodge, what a shame for such a large facility.

The akagera game lodge is a run down place that is run poorly. The staff overall does its best to make you feel at home but it is very VERY over rated. Rooms are USD 100 per night, there is no hot water in the shower and the swimming pool looks more like a pool to keep hippo's in then a swimming pool. Complaining to the staff is completely useless because the manager of the hotel likes to work from his home instead of working from the hotel it self. When we complained about the rates compared to the services offered we where treated like we where the ones that should be blamed. "No hot water??" We checked this morning at 04.30 and it was warm. When we woke up at 08.00 it was not. The swimming pool is a dirty pit with infested water not fit for a human to swim in. Dinner for 4 persons was over USD 160. If you can avoid this place: DO!!!!!

We thought it would be nice to visit a national park in Rwanda. At the time of booking there was no other choice then the Akagera game Lodge. We had read some reviews on tripadvisor before so we were alarmed about what we would find here. However we didn’t think it would be this bad.

About the Lodge:
The lodge is basically old and definitely needs some maintenance. At the time they just build this it must have been nice but we think there hasn’t been any maintenance since then. The rooms are old. They are kind of clean but not as you can expect from a lodge and the inventory is just old.

We’ve had a couple of times when there was no water. The toilet wasn’t fixed on the ground so when you sit down you nearly think it will break in pieces. The tiles, plaster and paint is just old.

The staff is friendly but most of the people don’t speak or understand English. When we arrived the old towels were still in the room so it wasn’t cleaned properly.
We requested one extra towel but at the reception they told us that it wasn’t possible.

The food is OK but not great. On the first night it took them one hour to bring the soup and another half hour to bring the (cold) main course. We are still waiting for the coffee and dessert. (it was a set menu so it mustn’t have been very difficult. After a complaint from our guide to the manager the second dinner was better.

The lodge grounds are also very old and unmaintained with unfinished buildings and a very dirty pool with green water. You can’t see the bottom while the pool isn’t very deep. I think you will get sick when you swim in it.

I will definitely not recommend people to go there. They said that a tented camp just opened nearby that must be better than this lodge so if you want to visit this park you can better stay there.

About the national park:
If you are looking for Tsetse flies you don’t have to look any further.
If you have been to other national parks in Africa there is a good chance you will get disappointed. The forest is quite dense so the chance of seeing wildlife is not very big. You will see some buffalo, impala’s, warthogs and if you are lucky an elephant but you will not see it very well and the animals are very shy.

There are leopards (we spoke to a farmer that works in the park!! and have seen one) but the chance of seeing them is very low. There are no lions but there are some plans to reintroduce them in the park in a couple of years. There are also no other cat’s like Cheetahs.

You can do a boat ride but both boats broke down a couple of weeks before we arrived so we don’t know how that is. They didn’t seem very eager to repair it. Driving in the park you will definitely see a lot (hundreds) of tsetse flies. They can give a nasty bite.

If you drive for about 3-4 hours in the tsetse area you can reach a part that is more open where you can see some other game like zebra’s, topi’s, giraffes, etc.
This part is the nicest part of the park.

Room Tip: Go to the other lodge.

This was my second stay at the Lodge. The first time we stayed in the hotel rooms. They are ok, but nothing special. The reception has a difficult time understanding what you need and reacting to your needs.
This time we stayed in the cottages. Upon our arrival, one cottage was being cleaned and the other was dirty with bugs on the floor. After the cleaning, I had to ask for towels as they didn´t leave any. We were told that the cottages had refrigerators, but they didn´t... at least we were able to keep things in the bar fridge. The kitchens in the cottages were in bad shape. The cottages are big, but sparsely furnished and expensive. The tennis courts have been taken over by weeds and the pool was green.
The good things are the incredible views from the cottages. It is a great location. The food is also good especially the fish (fresh and well cooked).
If you don´t have to stay at this place try camping or the new tented camp, but come through for the lunch menu.

Had a room looking over the pool onto the lake. Pool too cold to swim in. The staff friendly but slow in true Rwandan stlye. Packed lunch was excellent and enjoyed after the drive throuth the game park with a guide. This was expensive but the guide was very good and she was full of knowledge. The food was hot, fresh and good.

The lodge has a really nice location overlooking Lake Ihema. The room and the service was ok, but the bed was a bit hard. We asked for a quick lunch and it came in about 15 minutes, which must be a new record in Rwanda. Basic 3 stars accommodation.
