Manga Lodge
Reviewed November 19, 2012

When we got to Manga Lodge, we were very impressed. What an idyllic spot with your own little cove and a few meters away, a long stretch of sandy beach. The bungalows are quite spacious and comfortable and it is true, a ceiling fan would have been welcome. I think it is almost inevitable that the water supply is brackish along this coast. The architecture of the communal building which is very large with a mezzanine and indoor dining room is very interesting. The service is very efficient and friendly. All this makes for a lovely break along the west coast. We would certainly recommend this place.

Manga Lodge is located on the Southern side of the Andavadoaka Bay on the South Western Coast of Madagascar (22° 5'28.08"S; 43°14'40.64"E). It is small and quite isolated, about 3Km from town.

The access route goes through a lagoon-finger resulting in a wet experience during high-tides - spring-tide high had us wading through about 700mm of seawater to get to our accommodation.

You can reach Manga only by using a 4x4 or in a local “Taxi-Bus” – regional access roads are atrocious and really tough to negotiate. An alternative is probably to fly in on a charter, landing at the new state-of-the-art dirt landing strip close-by from where you can be whisked-off to the lodge by locals.

The views are picture-perfect. The very homely bar/restaurant/communal area is comfortable and inviting. No swimming pool is available but an azure ocean with little beaches creviced into the rocky coastline along the Naga perimeter makes for ideal swimming conditions and as much privacy you require.

The rooms are basic, very basic but clean and functional. ‘Room 2’ consists of a double room with 2x single yet comfortable beds in each, all sharing a closet area and bathroom. A small veranda with the necessary furniture and some tanning chairs round the room off for a relative comfortable stay. I like an airy living-space – opened each and every possible hole but found the room still a bit stuffy – and this in September (not yet fully Spring in the Southern Hemisphere). A fan would do wonders.

Our group of five men arrived unannounced late on a Saturday afternoon. This probably resulted in the hosts not having everything ready. No hot water. No fan. No mosquito goodies. The bathroom water – which I am absolutely convinced is directly pumped from the ocean – is VERY salty. No way that the very basic amenities, as supplied, have any chance of lathering or making an impact under that shower! None of the power outlets in my room worked. I was however invited to use outlets available in the communal area to charge phone and camera batteries.

My bathroom toilet seat broke with the first use. I reported it and within minutes had it replaced and in good working order – excellent service on this level!

I was a bit taken aback by the lack of “basics” but my friends with lots of local experience stated that this is the norm for small hotels/lodges on the South West “Mada” coast. Quite understandable if you look at the very reasonable rates we were charged for the night’s stay!

The food was basic but very well prepared and really good. The staff was just great. Our French host is there for the long term and is keeping a leisure finger on the pulse of business.

A great night spent at Manga. “Laid-back” is the local motto and all around live up to it.

To be recommended if you are not too fussy and prefer a more quite stay, a bit out of the bustling little town of Andavadoaka.

Room Tip: Not many to chose from - 1, 2 or 3 are about the same and certainly the best ones to have.
