10 of us including 4 overseas visitors enjoying the Otago Rail Trail arrived at this hotel at 11am on a Thursday to be met at the door by a sour faced woman publican and told they don't open until 11.30am then had the door closed in our faces. It's difficult to imagine a more negative and poor example of how not to treat tourists. As we rode away determined not to spend our money ($250+?) at this establishment, a local told us that it had been for sale for around 2 years. Hopefully someone with some positive energy displaces this unfortunate sourpuss soon, easily the worst example of how not to act and a black mark that the Rail Trail does not deserve.

Hi, Thank you for taking the time to write a review it is greatly appreciated, as the new owner of the Waipiata Country Hotel we are sorry to hear that your last experience with us wasn't as enjoyable as it should have been, there is no excuse for this level of service.

We would love to have you stay with us again if you are ever in our part of the world.

Waipiata is such a great place, with very friendly locals who enjoy a good chat at the end of the day, and we would love for you to experience this and our historic Central Otago Hotel. Regards Mark

Nobody to be found twice when we arrived after a hard day on the trail looking for a cold beer and a place to stay. When owner did arrive she noted that all Rail Trail'rs are always in a rush?! I was on holiday and in no rush, just wanted a cold beer - simple?! Simply we have met some wonderful people over the last three days and a smile and friendly banter would have seen us spend $200 + over the following hours, the $14 we did spend couldn't be drunk fast enough to go somewhere else. Good luck with your next career move.

Stayed at Tussock Lodge as a stop over on the Otago Rail Trail.
Few options but decide to eat with group of 11 at this small local pub.

Firstly we would all like to thank the family who run this hotel for their kind hospitality.

Local workers were there and were very kind and helpful. For such a small pub they produced good meals with perfectly cooked steak. They also made an effort as one of our group had a birthday. They were able to organise a cake and candles and helped celebrate our friends celebration.

There was transport back to our lodge. They were a big surprise and would not hesitate to go there again.

Southern hospitality at its best.

We had dinner here in early January while riding the rail trail. First things first, Waipiata is a one-horse town. There is no dairy, no café and no supermarket. However like all good Southern towns, it does have a pub, the Waipiata Hotel. The thing to be aware of though is that the pub doesn’t open until about 3pm so if you are riding the rail trail allow for this as the nearest coffee from here is in Ranfurly.

We arrived here out of the blue and asked if we could make a reservation for dinner. Our request was not particularly welcome by the proprietors as they had been expecting a quiet night and had given their restaurant staff the night off. To their credit, they did a bit of last-minute staff reshuffling and recruitment and pulled one out of the bag to take our reservation. Much to our relief as there was nowhere else to eat.

We ordered the garlic bread which was delicious. I highly recommend it. We then went on to order the rump steak (partner) and the rib-eye steak (me) together with salad and roast potatoes. The meals were huge, delicious and perfectly cooked. The serving staff was were friendly and courteous. In summary, a great dining experience.

Room Tip: Make a reservation in advance. The garlic bread is highly recommended.

We biked the Otago Rail Trail early December 2013. We stayed at Ranfurly and were looking forward to a cup of coffee at Waipiata - the next place on the trail. We were warned it wouldnt be open until 11.00am. Stopped there a bit after 11.00. No-one in sight, all locked up. Went around back and asked lady I found if it was possible to get a coffee. Downright rude sums up her reply. They didnt open until 3.00pm. This place is on the market and would be a prime opportunity for someone with some retail nouse and pleasant personality to provide a service to the people doing the Rail Trail. BE WARNED!
