As a nature guide and local tour operator the Haven Hotel is exactly the kind of destination I look for. A place where I can take my guests to experience the real people and places of South Africa.. It is isolated but accessible on dirt roads. It is set in an exquisite setting on rolling lawns just off the uninhabited beaches with a lighthouse keeping watch over the hotel and coastline. Surrounded by coastal dune forests as well as taller canopy forests with a diversity of protected wildlife. There is a lot to do such as Hiking, Bird watching, Swimming both in the sea and in the well kept swimming pool. Canoeing on the Mbashe river and a nearby lagoon. Take long languid walks on uninhabited beaches amongst herds of local cattle, Wild Buffalo, Antelope and Zebra. Do a cultural tour of the nearby villages with a local guide or you could just take time to relax on the golden beaches and catch up with yourself. We don't normally follow the 5 star accommodation route but use 5 star destinations and this is a 5 star destination. It is an old style country and family orientated hotel with good home cooking, a super relaxed atmosphere, owned by the local community and managed by a delightful family and their children. The road is tough on small cars but that is what keeps the hotel and the surrounding protected areas such a special place. I have been there some 8 or 9 times with the full intention of returning again and again.

Room Tip: Choose one of the front row of double rooms with lawn and sea views.

We spent 3 nights at The Haven. It is rustic but accomodation is good and food excellent. Staff are great,,friendly and efficient. There are fantastic walks to do and plenty of outdoor activity. A tremendous beach etc. we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. This is not for persons looking for 4 or 5 star accomodation but true old fashioned transkei experience in a great setting. road down can test your endurance.

As a family, we spent just short of 2 weeks at The Haven - December 2102/January 2013. Having read some of the reviews below, I do not agree with all as our experience over that period was very positive.

The Haven is not a luxury hotel catering for the discerning traveler, offering top class service and a place where luxury should exceed the needs and delivery of comfort. No, The Haven is a wonderful old establishment which allows its guests to get away from the material domination of modern day life and relax, with family and friends (you will make wonderful friends at The Haven) in a comfortable and homely environment. What makes The Haven unique is the fact that one has access to some incredible beaches, one of the last true natural forests on the South African coast, small streams and open lagoons without the invasion of the masses. This is all about getting away from it all and being able to stay in simple but clean and comfortable serviced accommodations, enjoy three really well prepared meals per day and enjoy this incredible coastline without being hassled.

The Haven Hotel is located in the middle of a protected natural sanctuary/reserve. Access by general public is limited and the beaches and forest areas surrounding the property are wild and natural. It is just beautiful!

It is very obvious that the property requires some good maintenance, however it is also completely understandable that this cannot be done until a secure lease is granted by the local community to operate the hotel. I was lead to understand that the management rights of the property are leased out by the local community, and assume that a secure and extended lease period would allow for management to make the necessary investments in upgrades and key maintenance requirements.

However - at no stage did maintenance issues have any effect on our stay.

Mathew and his team in the kitchen tried their best to serve us great variety and good quality home cooked meals. The food was wholesome and prepared with love!! The seafood feast and the braai over weekends was a right treat! The waitresses were all very friendly and helpful - and were great with the children from so many families making use of the place.

The atmosphere is very casual and conducive to those who would like to relax without feeling pressured to abide to a dress code. This place is not for snobs!!

From my own selfish perspective - long may the road access to The Haven be damaging to normal cars!!! I fear that the minute access becomes easy, the uniqueness of the destination and culture of the property will change!

The Haven is a gem and its uncomplicated facilities and service, great staff and access to quite possibly the most incredible coastline in SA is what makes it so special. We simply loved it!!

We will return!

Room Tip: There are different types of rooms. We stayed in one of the garden rondavels. Decor was simple, but the beds were comfortable and the linen was clean and crisp. It does not really matter - you should be going to this place for the area, not the rooms!

We booked 2 rooms for one night in December 2012. When we arrived, they wanted to give us one room and we had to fetch the booking confirmation to prove we booked two rooms. The rooms are sparsely decorated with "cupboards" made of planks and horrendous bathrooms. The bath looked terrible and I would not take a bath in it. The shower head was put in as an after-thought and uncomfortably located. The floor was covered in water once I finished showering.
The booking include dinner and breakfast. On the hotel website the menu and chef is pertenently mentioned as being excellent. We received not-too-fresh oysters and tasty muscles for starters and the main course looked like a boarding school meal of cabbage, boiled pumkin, shepherd's pie and rice with a non-descript baked pudding. Breakfast was porridge with bacon and eggs and fried tomato with watermelon.
At R900 (almost $100) pppn this is a rip-off and a shame as the other two hotels we stayed at in the area were much cheaper and had much better rooms and meals. I hope the management changes and this hotel with so much potential is improved.

The Haven was everything we hoped for: a wonderful old fashioned Transkei hotel in a most exquisite spot.

We were lucky with the drive in because the road from Elliotdale had recently been graded. (It's good to call the hotel to check on the condition of the road because it's sometimes appalling - to the extent that guests have on occasion had to give up and turn around...)

Its situation in the Cwebe Nature Reserve makes it uniquely secluded and peaceful. Beware though that the Eastern Cape Parks Board is not legendary for its attention to the roads within the reserve which are more or less impassible to anything but a 4x4. (The road down to the hotel was ok; but the side road to Breezy Point hasn't been maintained since the Rinderpest!)

The accommodation is basic but comfortable - excellent beds! The rooms were extremely clean.

The food was of the tasty, home-cooking variety; meals were a treat.

The walks were fabulous - beautiful indigenous forests (although somewhat overrun with lantana and guavas near the hotel, EC Parks Board take note). Very enjoyable horse-riding on well cared for, spirited horses. Spectacular, deserted beaches.

The staff were very friendly and helpful without being intrusive.

We were there for 5 nights and could easily have stayed for another 5.

Room Tip: The sea-facing rooms have a lovely view (but I'm sure the others are also nice).
