Review of Northside Cafe

Northside Cafe
Ranked #1 of 22 Restaurants in Winterset
Certificate of Excellence
Description: The Northside Café is located in a historic building built in 1876 by Eli Cox on the north side of the Winterset town square, across the street from the Madison County Courthouse. The Bridges of Madison County was written from our window seat booth (John Wayne booth), and was featured in the 1995 film “The Bridges of Madison County”, based on the Robert James Waller novel of the same name. In the Film the café is where Robert Kincaid (Clint Eastwood) meets Lucy Redfield (Michele Benes). Our café has been part of the presidential candidate circuit going back decades, and our upstairs has served as City Hall and Opera house in the 1800’s

Enjoyed avocado sandwich on great bread and the special dessert of the day - peach pie. The peaches tasted like they were just picked before they got to our table.

This place which featured in the film The Bridges of Madison County has recently been taken over however it still remains a delight. The seat that Clint Esatwood sat in in the film is the 4th stool along on the counter!

We found Northside Café on Trip Advisor. Both my husband and I had the farmers skillet- awesome! Our service, Daniel, said he was new but you sure couldn't tell. Nice , personable young man who gave us great service. Cool to be in the place the movie was shot.

We went there because of the movie, "the Bridges of Madison" county. What we found was much more. The cafe is the perfect location for breakfast. Everyone that we met was so friendly. There were no strangers there.

To visit this cafe is like stepping back in time to the 40's or 50's.
The cafe is clean, the waitresses friendly, and the food comes in huge portions. I had a chef's salad the first time, and then ordered the tenderloin a few days later which I was disappointed in. It was very large, a little dry and came on a hamburger bun without any sauce, a tiny bit of lettuce and a dried looking tomato. It was as if the cook forgot something. If we return I'll give it a third try and have something else on the menu.
