Nice downtown area quiet with cute shops. Old but very good grocery store. John Waynes house is a cute little bungalow just the average joe house. All kinds of kitsch and some nice things also. Worth a peek.

Fascinating birthplace of John Wayne in this lovely town of Winterset. We booked a guided tour of the entire house filled with photos that are not available on the Internet. There were also donated memorabilia used in his movies. The guide said Ronald Reagan visited the house during his trip to Des Moines because he wanted to see where John Wayne grew up. There is a lovely gazebo in the backyard.

Although a little off of the beaten path, the four room home John Wayne started life in is a must see. The house is full of Duke memorabilia and the tour guide from the gift shop located next door was able to provide some anecdotes from his early life. The Gift shop has a nice array of Duke related items and a few items to see from his films. Don't forget to walk around the block to see the larger than life John Wayne statue which sits in a small park adjacent to the soon to be constructed John Wayne Birthplace Museum.

Marion Morrison lived in this small home in Winterset until the age of four and then set out with his family to LA where he found his fortune and fame. Humble beginnings helped shape one of the greatest actors in American history and his trusty dog helped provide him with the nickname, Duke, that would follow him throughout his career. This special attraction is operated by carrying volunteers who help guide you through the early years of his life and create a vivid picture of the man who would capture the hearts of so many film-goers. The visit will take as long as you wish as the home is quite small but the memories are vast. Take the short trip off the interstate and enjoy history that will warm your heart.
