“Excellent food poor service”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

Asian Garden is a real treat for great tasting authentic cuisine. I don't hesitate to say that they have the best Asian food in the Cedar Valley and that Waverly, IA is lucky to have such an authentic choice available. If the rating was based on the food, I would give them five stars.

That said, you could write a book on the lack of service at the restaurant. It's a real shame to have such great food but such poor service! If you've been before you'll already know about waiting forever for a hostess when you come in the door. You won't be acknowledged and it might be a while before you can get a table. During lunch and dinner you can count on a good number of un-bussed dirty tables limiting the space. You most likely will not have the same waitress all the time and you may place you order with one person, receive your meal from another, and if you do get checked on, it might be yet another person. If you need anything during your meal you may need an air horn to get some assistance. Don't expect checks for refills etc. And of course, after your meal you will need to pay. They don't take payment at the tables, so take your bill and go wait in the front until someone realizes you are standing there and then decides whether to help you or not. It might be a while...
Other cons: No debit or credit machine as of last visit. No fountain machine; pop comes in cans.

If I had to rate on service alone I'd give one star. So, five stars for food, one star for service; and we end up at 3. Again, it really is too bad as the food is to die for.

“Best crab Rangoon!”

This is the best Chinese in NE Iowa. The Ming's Beef is wonderful. Plum sauce on sweet and sour dishes is homemade.

“Good Chinese Food”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2012

As a Waverly local I have to say this is one of the few restaurants that we often visit. We generally dine in for lunch or take out for dinner. We stick to the daily special for lunch. The staff is friendly and the food is good. For take out it usually takes longer than what they quote you on the phone, but the food is consistent. There are two other Chinese food restaurants in town, but this one is the best food for the price. Their credit card machine hasn't worked in over a year, so bring cash or a local check. Biggest problem is paying when you are ready to go, because the owner doesn't stay be the register so you need to watch for her.

“Authentic Experience, Food and Culture”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2011

I have eaten at the Asia Garden twice now and have been impressed both times. I have seen reviews that the service was really slow but you have to remember that it is a small establishment and the staff is just the husband and wife who own the place. The food is authentic, very tasty and the portion size is good. The coconut rice is yummy as is the Thai Curry. I will definitely go back. I enjoy the Chinese cultural atmosphere, everything from the decor to the music. You feel like you are not at a restaurant in Port Alberni, but somewhere in Taoyuan County, Taiwan.

“Horrible service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 24, 2010

We got there at 5:30. There was one other table besides us. We asked about our food at 6:30. They said that the table behind us was in a hurry so they put theirs in front of ours. We got our food about 7:00. By this time the place had filled up.The table next to us asked about their food and they told them they had not started it yet. The table said to forget their food because they were going to the concert and it started in 20 minutes. They had been sitting there for one hour. They MADE them pay for their tea and one egg roll and then they left. I will never go to this place again.
