The best thing about the Kinabalu Pine Resort is that all rooms have a view of the majestic Mount Kinabalu from the respective balconies. However, be quick to snap a photo when you can, as 70% of the time the mountain peak will not be visible due to heavy fog.

The rooms here are just the right size, and each room has a relatively wide porch-styled balcony (or just a porch if you're on the ground floor) shared between two rooms. Each block consists of 4 units, so be sure to get rooms next to each other if you're travelling in a group, so the porch can be shared.

Food at the resort is appropriately priced and not too expensive, and also quite tasty. Their dinner set may not sound very appealing at first but you will be satisfied once you're done. Fresh veggies are abundant and prepared very well.

Location is not too far from the major attractions in Kundasang. The resort is on the same stretch of road as the Kinabalu Park and the war memorial, but not within walking distance.

Staff is accommodating and friendly, yet respect your privacy enough for you to enjoy the stay without constantly being bothered.
All in all I had a wonderful stay at Kinabalu Pine Resort, and would definitely stay here again if given the opportunity to visit Kundasang again in the future.

Room Tip: Get rooms nearer to the restaurant.

As one reviewer stated the only thing this place has going for it are the views. Whoever owns this so called resort should be ashamed. It is very dirty. Stained mattress cover and pillows (look underneath those double pillow cases). Grey sheets. Looks like the top blanket had never been washed. I asked to have the mattress cover changed which never happened. They claimed to have come around 10pm but there was never a knock on the door. I had put in my complaint just after we arrived around 4pm.

The chalets are up and down "streets" where you either have to walk down or up with luggage which is not fun exercise then lug them up the stairs to the chalets. However, in fairness in our case, our guide and drivers did this for us.

I suppose if you want to stay cheap then dirty is the word that goes with Kinabalu Pine Resort.

I thought this hotel was very sweet with its little chalets and mountain views, and it worked out good value and well placed for visiting Kinabalu National Park (about a 10 min bus ride away).

Ten of us stayed together in neighbouring chalets and we enjoyed hanging out together on the terraces outside the rooms. We didn't specifically have "mountain view" rooms, but we could see the mountain fine from our terraces and really well if we walked up the hill to the top of the resort.

The rooms were pretty basic but clean and comfortable, and had satellite TV (I think!), hairdryers and warm showers. We enjoyed wandering around the charming resort, especially up to the top where there was also a pond with frogs and some rabbits. They had a bar with kareoke and a nice drinking terrace too.

Our price included food - perfectly good Asian fare and plenty of it - and transfer from Kota Kinabalu, all for about £20 a night. We managed to dodge paying the full cost before we arrived from England but did have to pay everything up front when we got there I think. The staff were able to advise us on how to get a public coach to Sandakan, which was only about £10.

My business partner and I stayed here for a couple of nights while on a short visit to Sabah

For the money, (we enjoyed a special offer of RM250 dinner bed & breakfast for 2 persons per night), one can’t complain too much! And certainly, the Resort made a pleasant base for our various excursions around Mt Kinabalu. We had one of the ‘deluxe’ chalets in ‘S’ block, which are certainly worth the little extra money, offering a very pleasant balcony with view over the mountain, and a bit more peace and quiet. The accommodation was clean, if simple, but with nice hot showers and comfortable beds (though we could have done with some more blankets as it does get a bit cold at nights!).

While the dinner included in the price was good and plentiful (mainly Chinese cuisine), breakfast left quite a lot to be desired, and if you turned up after 9.30 you found they were running out of food, even though breakfast officially ended at 10! Even what was left was congealed and burnt – not very nice!

The Resort is situated above a village, which had a very loud disco going on for most of Saturday evening – so getting a decent night’s sleep was a bit difficult, and it certainly spoilt the otherwise serene atmosphere of the mountains. The village is also quite noisy at night and in the mornings. I think one might be better off staying in one of the lodges actually in the Mt Kinabalu park if one wants to enjoy the tranquillity of nature…

There was also something a bit eccentric about the reception we received: first of all, they wanted us to pay for the accommodation in advance on our arrival (which we refused to do); then they said we would have to move rooms on our second night (again we refused to accept this, and with a shrug, they gave us the same room for both nights). Can’t they understand how off-putting that is?
