Celyn Resort Kinabalu
Ranked #5 of 12 Kundasang B&B and Inns
Reviewed December 7, 2013

During our last trip to KK in November 2013, we booked a room at Celyn Resort's Kinabalu Wing for 2 nights at RM200 a night. We had rented a car from KK City solely for the purpose of going up to Kundasang / Ranau area.

Being first-timers here, we were quite clueless as to where things are in Kundasang / Ranau. We were worried that we will have trouble finding the hotel but thankfully, internet data signal was strong in this part of Sabah so Google Maps worked like a charm.

The hotel is located right on top of a mountain. It is about about 15 minutes drive or so from Pekan Kundasang (in fact it is right smack in the middle between Pekan Kundasang and Ranau town). To get there, you will have to turn into a small uphill lane which started out as a tarred road for a while. Then, it was gravel and packed earth all the way up. While driving, if you were to look upwards towards the mountain for a bit, you should be able to see Celyn sitting almost precariously at the top.

The room was very cozy and very clean and has all the usual amenities a normal hotel offers. Our verandah has one small table and 2 chairs. It overlooks Mount Kinabalu so you should be able to see it rise up majestically into the sky on a clear morning when the clouds are still down in the valley. As the day progresses, the clouds will rise up and they will cover the mountain in fog so thick you will not be able to see it at all. Best time to catch the view is 7am when the morning sun rays hit the face of the mountain making it look almost like one of the scenes in Lord of the Rings.

Did I mention we had 2 chairs and a table in our verandah? We had one of the most relaxing tea there - enjoying the nice cool weather with a warm cup in hand and a good book in the other. Awesome times.

Here are a couple of additional tips when staying over in the area:-

1. There are practically nothing to do when the sun sets. So we basically just sleep the night away. But if you like, do pack some DVDs or smth to pass time at night. There is a working TV and DVD player in our room.

2. Food can be quite expensive at the hotel. I suggest that you pack food from one of the pekans (like fresh fruits) or from Ranau town itself. We did just this on our 2nd night there. We ate our dinner in our room while watching some silly Japanese drama (Cromartie High School, if you need to know). One family staying in the same hotel as us went the extra mile by bringing cooking pots, fresh vegs and whatever nots and had steaming hotpot for dinner at the common area. We jellied....

Room Tip: Rooms rates for Celyn Hotel's Kinabalu Wing is slightly more expensive than the other rooms at V...

A series of chalets and lodges set high on a hilltop with stunning views of the landscape and especially of Mt Kinabalu. The site of this resort is absolutely stunning. The drive up a very steep, bumpy road is daunting - but when you reach the entrance the lovely gardens unfold and the chalets await in the cool mountain air.

If you want to climb Mt Kinabalu this is a perfect base. Or if, like me, you just want to look at it this is equally as good. The chalet rooms are spacious with big double sliding doors opening onto a small deck. Set your alarm for sunrise, get a cup of tea, and sit outside watching the changing colours of the mountains in the early mornings.

There's a decent restaurant on site with a good choice of dishes for the evening and a good buffet breakfast. They won't always have everything available on the menu - it's fairly remote here - but who cares? A truly fabulous location, with decent rooms and friendly staff at very good prices. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone touring the mountains of Sabah.

Just one tip: You're in the jungle. When it gets dark shut all the windows before you switch on the lights inside - otherwise you'll share the room with 100 moths!

Room Tip: Try and get a room facing Mt Kinabalu - you'll never forget the sunrise.

Having visited Kinabalu Pines Resort while I was there, I thought Celyn Resort is a better choice in terms of value for money and its amazing view if you choose to stay at Kinabalu wing. But I think it's still ok if you opt for the Valley wing because you would still have a good access to the view with just a short walk.

The room is relatively clean but the toilet needs a little more scrubbing. Size is just nice for two persons and the terrace is a great spot to relax, eat some fruits and enjoy the fresh air and amazing view in front of you. There are complimentary coffee/tea and most importantly, tv and dvd player. So bring some dvds as the resort doesn't provide a game room to chill at night.

Breakfast was a simple buffet but it's enough to start your day. However, just like the coffee in the room, the coffee here sucks as well. Pls bring your own coffee! I skipped coffee and drank tea on the second day.

I would advise for new guests to arrive at the resort before dark as you'd have to drive for a good 10 mins or about 2km on a gravel road with minimal signs. Driving at night here may be a bit creepy especially during rainy season when the fog is too thick.

Love the view from the rooms. Rooms are well maintain and comfortable.
Food at the cafe was just ok. But just what we were looking for... quiet, cool and relaxing place.

The road leading into the resort can be very bumpy. Unfortunately it is public property and the government is not very interested to fix it.

Room Tip: Ask for Kinabalu wing for the great view of Mt Kinabalu

Friends and I stay there for 2 nights, booked 5 rooms total. 3 units were on the top floor (1st floor), and 2 units at the bottom (Ground floor). Clean rooms and all well equipped like hot shower, hair dryer and etc. Staff there are all very friendly and helpful, we even meet the General Manager there and had a great talk with her, explaining all about Kinabalu to us.

The resort is located a distance from the main road, and it's a pain in the butt to have travel in and out of the resort as the roads are all gravel and uneven but you get to enjoy the quietness and view.

We were force to have dinner at the Resort as the sky turns dark quite early there, (around 6p.m) and partly because of the roads as well. The barbecue dinner was totally worth it, cost around RM45 per person, but they serve lamb, prawns, satay, chicken wings and sausages, they even provide main course like fried rice and fried vegetable, ended it with a mix fruit platter. If you have to had dinner there, remember to tell the crew that you would like to have it at the platform outside your hotel room. Night breeze there is awesome accompany by a barbecue pit.

Breakfast for the first day was a bit disappointing as the staff told us that there were no buffet breakfast, but the coffee/tea and breads are refillable. I guess they heard our complains and provided buffet breakfast for the second day.

We manage to walk around the Resort for a while and found out that there are many types of rooms available in the resort. One of them named "Jungle" which is located further in from the reception centre that are surrounded by jungles, looks special and creepy at the same time especially at night time.

We did not wake up to the Mount Kinabalu sunrise view, but we have good access to it, just turn around to the back of the hotel room and there's a space for you to take a good view of the sunrise.

My wife booked for a vacation to this resort and we arrived quite late at around 6pm when it's already dark. Settled in and slept at around 8pm after a quick dinner.
No much selection from it's only cafe/ restaurant but if the crowd is bigger i would go for their steam boat. Had their Tuaran mee and it actually tasted not too bad.

Woke up early at around 6am and once we open up the window curtain, BEHOLD...one of the best view i've ever woke up too!
The sunrise shining the backdrop of Mount Kinabalu....
The resort facilities has nothing to complaint, clean room, adequate hot water for shower, coffee tea making facilities (hence can bring your own 3 in 1 or noodle cup).

Will i return again? You bet! but PLEASE MAKE SURE you get only the Kinabalu View...it's JUST WORTH the money!

Room Tip: ONLY Choose the rooms with KINABALU View... Valley view still ok but trust me...you will understand...

Like what others have mentioned, whatever shortcomings we felt were mitigated by the significant view of the great Mount Kinabalu. Breakfast was basic, but then even the restaurant is next to the fresh greeneries. Nothing can't beat the feeling of waking up to the mesmerising view, even the clear footsteps of people living on the higher floors walking up and down the stairs next to your room. Really hope the management could do something to the road coming up to the resort, which is filled with small rocks and unstable slopes.
