“Oldest Restaurant in town and most reliable.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

From fun and unique ice cream treats: the Gosh Awful Gooey is a fave, to the Matza Ball soup, Chicken in the Gables and now their original corn fritter recipe has been found and resurrected. This is/was Dear Abby and Ann Landers' favorite hometown restaurant. Once you have been here, you will know why.

“Enjoy the memories, but skip the dinner”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

We are from out of town and spending 4 weeks in Sioux City, eating out a lot and trying different places. This place was mentioned numerous times and I imagine it was once a great place. Today, you enter the restaurant and the overwhelming smell makes you think that you are back in the house of that grandparent who never really cleaned anything. The first time I went there, the smell was enough to make me back out, but after another recommendation, I gave it a try.

I really do not have much good to say. The people were nice for mid-western folks. The ice cream sundae is the reason to go - the portion of fudge (in a tureen to pour on the ice cream at the table) is small, but tasty.

The problem really is everything else. I am not a clean freak - I eat in restaurants all the time that people would call hole-in-the-wall. But the pervasive sense of uncleanness and neglect affects everything.

I had the matzo ball soup (the matzo ball was nice, but the flavorful broth was strongly of bouillon concentrate), the hot beef sandwich (the gravy from a mix, the mashed potatoes from flakes, and the meat was the "chipped, pressed beef that Arby's uses), and apple pie (factory made I think, but very good).

Other than the smell and the sense of unmaintained/uncleaned, my complaint is that everything was from some industrial concentrate. I do not recommend this

“An institution”

OK, so the place hasn't been updated in probably 50 years; so what, adds to the ambiance. The matzo ball soup and hot fudge sundae are NOT to be missed.

“Sioux City landmark with crabby waitresses”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

We eat here at least once a month despite the very rude and sometimes down right ridiculous attitude from some of the waitresses and hostess. Retire already! They give you the feeling you're putting them out and forget the fact that they are a place of business. Some of the waitresses are very friendly, so I do feel bad saying saying the service is poor. Yes, the atmosphere is very old school and more suited for my great grandma, but that doesn't bother me. The food is decent. I recommend the Chicken in the Gables and the matzo ball soup. The hot fudge sundae is also very popular.
