Owner description: Located in the heart of downtown Sioux City, the Sioux City Public Museum features large, colorful exhibits, interactive displays, and much more. Visitors will discover the "Spirit of Sioux City" through a lively 12-minute orientation film in the ornate "corn palace theatre." A variety of hands-on experiences are available including the award-winning "Innovation I-Wall" and "The Big Dig," which replicates an active fossil dig site. Highlights of the permanent gallery are rare Native American artifacts from the area; Sioux City's first "horseless buggy," a 1901 Oldsmobile; a 1930 Kari-Keen airplane manufactured in Sioux City; and a 1918 Mack fire truck similar to ones used by the Sioux City Fire Department. The two-story Disaster and Recovery Wall features multi-media presentations of three major Sioux City catastrophes: the 1904 Pelletier Department Store fire, the 1953 Floyd River Flood, and the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232. Temporary exhibits feature topics of local and regional interest.

We visited the museum this summer and they boasted that they were kid friendly and that you could wander around at your leisure.

We brought our two children with us and they were excited to be there. We walked through the exhibits in no particular order which apparently annoyed one of the workers. He very rudely told us that we needed to follow the "correct" path through the museum after we had been told there was no path to follow through the museum. Needless to say we left right after that.

I did write an email to the head of the museum about our experience and he was very apologetic and confirmed that there is no set path through the exhibits as they want it to be interactive and child friendly.

Unfortunately because of our first experience we probably won't go back. Hopefully their staff now understands how the museum is supposed to work and isn't rude to any other patrons.

I do think that had we had a better experience with the one staff member, our children would have had a lot of fun. The man that greeted us at the door was great! The exhibits were interactive. It's clean. They obviously put in a lot of time and energy into the quality of their exhibits.

“Excellent history of the Sioux City area”
Reviewed November 29, 2011

This museum is free to all and should be a required visit for all students and citizens living in the area as it gives a very positive and informative history of the area.
