“My favourite place in Kenya”
Reviewed June 27, 2012

This is an absolute jewel of a place, tucked away deep in the Mathew's Range of Kenya. Nestled in a green valley, this is a playground for leopards, lions, elephants and hyenas, and anyone lucky enough to get to come here.

There are only six tents, and apart from our group, no other tourists. It is the perfect place to get away from it all.

The tents are spacious, the staff fantastic, the food superb. They looked after us so well, it was so sad to leave. i will be back as soon as I can be.

Just back from a long weekend at Kitich, for what was my first visit to the Mathew's Range after hearing amazing things about the mountains for years from lots and lots of Kenya safari old-timers. Not disappointed at all - it really is a magical place with a strange, undefinable but striking aura of timelessness, tranquility and seclusion.

The camp is excellently run by Patrick and the large, friendly and well-trained staff, almost all of them from the local Samburu community. Tents and public areas very comfortable - simpler, perhaps, that other camps nearby, but that matches the ambiance of the setting. Food excellent, beers cold, shower water hot, no request too much from our party - which included a toddler and a baby.

The main attraction of the place is the walks off through the forested slopes and open glades of the wilderness leading down the valley away from camp. A two-hour hike along paths dotted with fresh spoor of leopard, lion (huge) and elephant led to a rock pool for a refreshing dip then a picnic lunch in the bush. Later, sundowners overlooking hillsides where elephant herds grazed. And all of it completely exclusive just to our group. Magical.

And, the final surprise, it really is not that tough to get there by road all the way from Nairobi. Including an hour for lunch in Nanyuki, the trip took 8 hours, which definitely puts Kitich into contention for long weekends (three nights) from Nairobi. It truly is worth it.

We were looking for a different kind of safari than the usual tourist experience in Kenya. Kitich Camp was just the ticket! Located in the Mathews Range of mountains in Samburu district, northern Kenya, it was just the place to get away from zebra striped vans of tourists and the hotel buffet meals. We earned it by flying to the Samburu air strip in Buffalo Springs, then traveling by Land Rover for 3 and a half hours over dirt tracks to the camp. The camp is exclusive with only 6 tents at the foot of the Kitich forest and a great view over the marsh where we saw elephants and other wildlife. The camp managers (Patrick and Miriam) are delightful hosts and for two of the three days in the camp we dined with them, as there were no other guests. This is what sets this experience apart - its personal touch. We took walking safaris with our three Samburu guides and one walk just missed seeing a leopard hunt down some bushbuck. Another, time, we visited a village, Lokunuyani, on their weekly market day (Thursday's) and wandered freely among the Samburu who thankfully made no fuss about our presence (but were friendly, nonetheless). Although the area experienced some freak rains this did not dampen our pleasure in the experience and left feeling nostalgic and satisfied.

A group of us went to Kitich last month for two days and it was probably one of the best camps I have stayed at in Kenya. We flew into Samburu from Wilson Airport in Nairobi on a scheduled flight, the flying time is only just over one hour, and then were picked up at the airstrip and taken to the camp. The drive is LONG at 3.5 hours and there is an airstrip that is very close to the camp which you can get into if you drive up to Nanyuki and then hire a plane from there. This is actually a lot more affordable than it sounds and is worth the cutting out of the long drive.
The drive up is through quite spares semi-arid land that is nice but nothing too dramatic, so I didn’t have too high an expectation of where we were going and what it would look like. However, once we got to the valley where the camp is it totally transformed and looked more like something out of the film the land that time forgot with thick forest, beautiful dark green cover all over and full of birds and animals.
The camp itself is very small with I think about six double tents and then it has a bar and communal eating area which overlooks the valley and a small river.
This is not the usual camp where you spend all day in a van been driven around and stare at animals out of the window, all the excursions are on foot through the forest accompanied by guides. Although we didn’t see a huge amount of game on the walks, apart from elephants, there was lots of spore from a wide range of animals including lions, leopard etc. Quite frankly I am happy seeing the footprints of these things rather than then standing in front of me.
A great attraction of the place is walking up to the natural pools in the river where you can go swimming although it is a bit nippy.
The couple running the place, Patrick and his wife (sorry totally forgot her name) are great hosts and organise the day’s events and food to suit what you need.
Overall, a truly great place to visit and quite unique in Kenya.

We had such an amazing time at Kitich Camp going on walking safaris, swimming in beautiful natural pools, eating gourmet meals and just relaxing in our tents enjoying the quietness of nature. The Sumburu staff were friendly, caring, and helpful and shared a lot of interesting facts during safaris. We would love to come back and reccomend this camp as a perfect weekend getaway for couples and families.
