“Budget accommodation which needs upgrading”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

The hotel is OK if you're just passing through. It's just off the main Dar-Moshi road and there isn't much else around about it. The rooms all need upgrading but it was cheap (around £40 per room for dinner bed and breakfast as residents of TZ). The beds had mosquito nets. The food was good. There were monkeys running around outside. The staff were helpful and friendly. I wouldn't want to spend a holiday here but it was OK for one night.

I've stayed here twice - both times on the way to Pangani, and as previous contributors have said - it's ideally located for a stop over following a late afternoon get away from Arusha. The rooms are very clean, it's very quiet and there is a relaxing garden outside. The restaurant is good, the service is excellent and the staff are very friendly and accommodating. I will definitely go again.

Room Tip: The rooms in the front wing seem to be more modernised than those in the rear wing.

First of all, there are some misleading things about this listing. Trip Advisor insists that a region be included in the locations. Unfortunately, anything inside of Kilimanjaro Region is automatically listed as inside Kilimanjaro National Park. This is a few hours away from the national park. It is near Gonga in Same District (pronounced SAH-may) in Kilimanjaro Region. Secondly, the name of the lodge is Temboni which is Swahili for "in the elephant / at the elephant". If you see the lodge, the name will make sense since the restaurant/bar is inside of a building that is designed to look like an elephant. Now down to the details...the lodge is indeed a great value for the money. There are the standard rooms, well decorated with tiled floors, satellite TV,refrigerator, remote controlled fan and a very nice bathroom. There is also a deluxe suite, which is huge with a kitchen, dining room and two bedrooms, at a very good price. The location is within a 5 minute drive of Gonga and not far from Mkomazi National Park. Most noticeable about the lodge is the sculptures dotting the grounds. I will allow the photos the I am submitting help you understand. The staff is very friendly and are very flexible and accommodating. It is easy to want this place be successful and wish the staff the best of luck. I have stayed there on two occasions. Unfortunately, on one occasion there was no electricity in the area that day and also no water. The staff had given us several buckets of water to use. The second occasion there was also no water (but at least electricity). This water supply shortage was for the entire area so the hotel cannot be blamed. I am mentioning the shortage so visitors will realize that this as a bit remote of an area and services are not always available. If you want a comfortable, rural getaway,
this is a very good option. The road from Same town has improved recently but there were still some very rough portions as of January 2012.

Ive stayed here several times on my way to Pangani as its roughly the halfway point from Arusha to the beach, and early starts from the motel get you to the beach early morning.
Its close to the National Park, the food is good, the rooms are modest and comfortable, and the staff are helpful.
I will continue to visit!!

Room Tip: The right wing has less light and noise.

We stayed at the Elephant Motel on a small cross country trip in Tanzania on our way to a voluntary project. The reason we stopped at the motel was to be close to Mkomazi National Park. The national park is rather new and has very little in the way of tourism. They do however have some great conservation work going on that we were very lucky to be invited to tour.

The motel itself is within the best that we stayed in Tanzania. It was comfortable and secure. The service was very friendly and the manager was extremely helpful throughout our four night stay. The food was basic but good...the best part of our stay however was hand feeding baby monkey's that live on the roof of the hotel.

Overall; its a convenient place to stop to visit the National Park, however if you can afford it - stay at Babu's Camp! P.S. pay the little bit more for the suite!

Elephant Motel offers good value for money. The rooms are very reasonably priced and the location in Same town just 6 km from the entry gate to Mkomazi National Park makes the hotel a very convenient base for exploring the park. Mkomazi was recently (2008) gazetted as a National Park and the infrastructure in the park is not yet very developed. There is only one camp inside the park which offers much more expensive accommodation. This makes Elephant Motel a perfect choice if you don't want to splash out!

Rooms are basic but clean and staff very attentive and friendly. The hotel has a bar and a restaurant that served simple but nice food. All rooms have TV, some also have a fridge and the hotel offers safe parking.

Elephant motel is in no way luxurious but you get what you pay for - plus easy access to one of the most 'secret' national parks in Tanzania.

First up. A Geography lesson for TA.
Despite telling TA (TWICE) that the town of Same (pronounced Sarmay) is NOT in Kilimanjaro NP which is barely visible some 200 kms north, I see they insist in saying it is.
Don't be fooled by this. Same is in the lee of the North and South Pare Mountains about 150 kms from Moshi on the road to Dar es Salaam.
So as long as this is understood and supposing you are in Same (and why not) and needing a bed then read on. If you are looking for a Lodge in Kilimanjaro then try somewhere else. This is not for you.
Same is a good place by which to enter the Mkomazi National park and also to break journeys to/from Dar and/or the Usumbaras and Lushoto, Tanga etc., Gottit?
I have stayed here twice and it is as good as it gets around here. There are more modern rooms at $50 but the ones I have used have been fair enough for even Mrs.M to pass the night in comfort.
Situated about 2km south of the main town and the turn off to Mkomazi, the property is set back from the road in pleasant 'secure' grounds. I tested the 'security' by going for a walk into town around Midnight but the guard only accosted me when re-entering the Lodge.
There is adequate parking (it's not really a Motel in the true sense as you cannot drive to your bedroom.) under the trees. Reception is prompt and friendly next to a Bar and the Restaurant areas. At the time of both my visits both these were relatively quiet. Food is basic and somewhat "African" in content but very palatable from a printed Menu with several choices. Bar prices seem to be 'negotiable' and the local Gin was cheaper, and nicer, than the Beer.
Rooms are quiet and contain the usual mod cons En suite. Hot water on tap! Beds are soft and equipped with Nets although repairs are not holding. However we sprayed the room and survived.
There is a telephone, electric light and even a TV. I unplugged this and used the socket to charge Camera Batteries etc.,
Not a lot more to say. If you need a bed in Same and Babu's in Mkomazi is off budget then try this. The better rooms are virtual Suites with a Sofa etc., so a stay of a few days would be comfortable enough.
EMail is [--] and they do respond. Booking is rarely necessary.
