We stopped by for their Monday Burger Night. We were there early so had no trouble being seated. Service was very attentive. The burgers were well prepared. They have an amazing selection of toppings -- all the usual, grilled onions, mushrooms, bacon and even warmed peanut butter (we haven't been able to bring ourselves to try the peanut butter). With the burger you get a grilled mixture of potatoes, onions and green peppers or a baked potato.

We usually stop at Rube's on the way home after a cold, Fall football game in Ames. Montour is about an hour's drive East of Ames or if coming from the East it is about an hour West of Cedar Rapids, Iowa traveling on the new and improved Highway 30.

Rube's is one of the original grill your own steakhouses and you can get that warm feeling by grilling your own steak on one of their two large grills.

The atmosphere is very plain and simple wood paneling and dark well worn carpet and wood floors. There is a bar too for watching TV. Restrooms are small, but plentiful and scattered about the building.

Sometimes a line when you arrive, but seating is plentiful and service is fast and friendly. A well established restaurant, knowledgeable in making and keeping visitors happy.

You will be seated promptly in sturdy wooden tables and chairs, decorated with condiments. The wait staff will stop by and take drink orders and allow you to visit a moderate, yet acceptable and unlimited trip, salad bar or you can head straight to the grill. Before heading to the grills, you are taken to the meat case to view an assortment of cuts of grain-fed, dry-aged, hand-cut steaks. The variety of steaks range from a medium sized fillet up to a monster cut of beef sized to feed a family. In addition, chicken, shrimp, ham and pork are also available. The wait staff is very knowledgeable and can explain each cut and give descriptions and preparation suggestions for the other menu items.

On this particular night, our group of six picked an array of steaks. I had a well marbled bone-in ribeye called the Cowboy Cut of about 20oz. Once you've selected your cut of meat, it is given to you on a glass plate lined with paper. You head to the grill and drop it down onto a well fired grill with up to 10 or so other folks. Brief times the grill feels crowded, but folks finish up fairly quickly.

Surrounding the grills is a ledge upon which there are containers of garlic butter to brush on your Texas Toast that you prepare while your steak is grilling. Around the parameter of the room is another bar-like ledge upon which to place your favorite beverage while you watch the flames lick over your steak preparing it to perfection (you are the grill master - right?). Oh if your aren't the grill master, Rube's will prepare your steak for you in case basking in the warm glow of the fire, chatting with your friends isn't your idea of a trip to a restaurant.

Sitting on the grill is a large iron skillet filled with simmering cut potatoes and other flavor inducing vegetables (peppers). When your steak is finished to your liking, scoop up some potatoes and head to your table with your Texas Toast, if you haven't consumed several slices already.

Once at the table, the ever courteous wait staff will bring you a hot, baked potato on a separate plate with butter and sour cream, if you didn't help yourself to the skillet potatoes.

I'm sure there are appetizers and desserts, but my total concentration was focused on the steak at hand, prepared just the way I like it.

I left with a warm glow on my face and a warm feeling in my belly after enjoying a reasonably priced and well prepared meal at Rube's in Montour.

Went there for a girls' night out. I've never cooked a steak in my life but with all the friendly diners standing around cooking, talking, etc, there's always lots of helpful advice. Great steak, fun atmosphere, all-you-can-eat sides. Who's got room for dessert? Not me! Don't miss out on toasting your own Texas Toast on the grill & eating it as an appetizer while you grill. Yum Yum! Totally worth the trip to Montour...and I live in Phoenix!

Small town, old establishment, customer oriented workers, perfect steaks, what more could you ask for?

We make this a stop on our "food tour" when we are back in the area. The steaks are tops, salad bar needs a little more though. This time, there were very few fresh veggies to choose from, and I like to have some variety when eating a heavy meal of steak and potatoes. Make sure to try the baked beans, they are a little bite of heaven...wish I had the recipe!
