Review of Music Man Square

Music Man Square
Reviewed December 4, 2012

Meredith Wilson was from Mason City--and wrote The Music Man. This museum has period storefronts, barber shops, a musical instrument museum, artifacts and interviews about the movie, and a meeting room with "76 trombones" decorating the ceiling. Have an ice cream cone at the old-fashioned treat shop.

The whole place is inexpensive--and I guarantee you'll feel good when it's time to go.

If you are interested in The Music Man and\or band music as well as Meredith Willson this is a fun visit. The tour takes a couple of hours and all of the tour guides are local volunteers, some who knew Meredith Willson.

Loved Music Man Square, it is like visiting the Hollywood soundstage of the movie. Our guide was so interesting and knowledgeable, and there is a short film narrated by Shirley Jones about the behind-the-scenes happenings during the filming of the movie that is worth the time.

Mason City is close to Clear Lake so if you are in the area to see the Buddy Holly sites, take a short trip into Mason City. We liked the Music Man Square with all the buildings that looked like River City from the movie. They have a tour of Wilson's boyhood home that I would only recommend to people that are really into Meredith Wilson, or old homes. Our guide was very nice and knew her stuff, but provided much more information than I personally needed about the house and the life of Wilson.

Docents obviously love the place, very personable, patient with questions. Delightful recreation of 1912 shopping.
