My husband and I toured Iowa following the historic Lincoln Highway, Route 30. One recommended stop in our guide book was Taylor's Maid-Rite in Marshalltown Iowa, locally famous for their "loose-meat" sandwiches. The restaurant is small with sit-down service at a counter with bar stools. This arrangement provided for much conversation with fellow customers and a good view of the restaurant operations. Taylor's Maid-Rite began in 1926 and serves a ground beef sandwich, with beef ground on premises. The beef is loose (not formed into a patty) and plentiful and is served in a hamburger roll with mustard, onion and pickle and the price is under $3. The restaurant also serves shakes and malts in a variety of flavors in a large size that can serve 2 people, also under $3. The people in Iowa are very friendly and we had a great time talking with several customers at the counter. Taylor's Maid-Rite is a bit of Iowa history and a lot of fun. Give these a try if you see one of the now growing franchise of restaurants in Iowa and elsewhere.
