“Portela, a heavenly escapade spot”

After an ever increasingly hectic work schedule, Portela emerged as a heavenly escapade spot in a pristine environment, away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
A true example of excellent hospitality with courteous and obliging hosts, it really left nothing to be desired. Amenities and service were impeccable and on top of them, a swimming pool which made you believe that the sea had stretched out to reach you.
And all this, right above a quaint village and the crystal clear waters of the sea.
What else could anyone possibly wish for?

“WONDERFUL ACCOMMODATION AND SETTING.”

These apartments are in Kastri (not nearby Keratocambos) and can be seen perched above the small harbour and accessed directly from the winding road which leads down from the mountains. The apartments offer well equipped accommodation and awesome views. We particularly enjoyed the quality mattress and the walk in shower.
Externally there are a lot of steps to negotiate down to the pool (which is operational but still needs completion work to the surrounds).
There is a nearby shop and about four or five tavernas - we felt it was worth the short extra walk to those in Keratokambos. A short drive West brings you to Tsousouros which also has a selection of tavernas and a couple of shops.
The owners of Portela were very welcoming and keen to please - we hope to see them again soon!

“Well equipped apartment with stunning views!”

Keratokampos is a quiet tiny village at the Lybian Sea. This aparment is very spacious, well equiped (two airco's) and has a large balcony or terrace with stunning views. Nice beaches nearby, a supermarket at walking distance and some very good restaurants.
The small complex offers perfect WiFi and a brandnew swimmingpool.
The kitchen is better equiped than most Greek apartments, with oven, coffee-machine, toaster and watercooker.

“Superb and very special!”

We had a wonderful fortnight here, the owner and his wife were hospitality itself, available when needed, welcoming at all times, but not intrusive. We needed a place to do nothing, just relax and breathe, and we found it! The view from the balcony, and the sounds, just sitting overlooking the harbour, and sideways to the hill were bliss, a real recipe for relaxation. We tried Carob pods and white mulberries from the garden, courtesy of the owner (Stavros' father Manolis), we found everything we needed at the shop down the hill, and peace and tranquillity on the secluded beach a little way along the coast (worth the clamber). The apartment was pleasant and scrupulously clean. The mattress was very firm (hard!), but we had mailed them ahead because of my wife's bad back, and they went out of their way to provide extra bedding to pad it and make it softer. We visited Ierapetra several times (55km away) and found it well worth a visit, with good shops, a lovely restaurant, and welcoming people.
A car is pretty much a necessity, but it was lovely to visit a village barely touched by tourism, and just sit and watch the boats and goats coming and going!

“Absolutely Idyllic”
Reviewed November 1, 2015 for a stay in October 2015

The good bits: The only sound is the lap of waves and the chirp of crickets. The limpid Libyan Sea is 100 m away. You can pick your breakfast fruit from the trees in the garden.
The owner is hospitality personified.
The (possibly) less than good bits: You are miles from anywhere. The nearest taverna is 5km in either direction. If you need anything that a mini-market cannot provide, then you have 30 min over hairpin-bend roads to reach the nearest village.
If you're happy in your own head and have everything you need, this place will be hard to beat.

Management Response
Nov 2, 2015
Dear Casey,

Thank you very much for your nice review, I hope you had a great time.

I have to mention here that you have stayed in my apartments in Kampoula and not the ones that are being advertised here that are in Kastri.

Portela Apartments in Kastri are in the village so everything is around in walking distance.

Portela Apartments in Kampoula are 7-10 minutes drive from the village.

Kind Regards,

Stavros & Manolis

“Peaceful bliss and hospitality overlooking the deep blues of the Libyan Sea”

We loved our apartment with its generous balcony giving us our uninterrupted view of the blue Libyan sea. The high quality of the furnishing (modern and really elegant) and lovely grounds (pick your own basil, figs and oranges) set it apart from everything else we’ve seen or stayed in during our many trips to Crete. Took us only an hour to get from Heraklion and the owner, Stavros, proved amazingly hospitable. We can’t wait to go back – really great value and highly recommended. We also liked the unspoilt feel of Kastri, the beachside village adjoining Keratokampos, where we enjoyed superb food in all 7 of its Tavernas – a huge choice for such a tiny place! There are great beaches to visit nearby, so you can choose from a few minutes walk to a five-minute drive. It definitely beats the more developed resorts on either end of the bay – Arvi or Tsoutsouras which can each be reached within 20 minutes drive – they lack the surprising charm of Kastri and you don’t get to enjoy wonderful local food sitting above the waves as you do in tavernas overlooking Keratokampou Bay.

“Outstaning accommodation in Kastri-Keratokampos”

Lovely people and good equipped apartments or studios, all in a very good condition. Family operated facility with a nice view to the ocean and the habor. A place where you want to spend your holidays!

Good Tavernas nearby and some lonely beaches with relatively little tourists. Just stay and relax. Stavros and his parents are very friendly lessors and invited us to fresh water melon and Raki the last evening. You should really take into consideration to stay here!

Moderate price even in high season! Bonus: Very fast Wi-Fi connection!!! The only disadvantage of this facility is that you have to carry your luggage downhill / uphill depending which apartment you own. So it is not recommended for handicapped people.
