I stayed here with my mum for a night in March as part of a groupon deal. We were really pleased with the service we received. I paid for the upgrade to stay in one of the superior rooms and was not disappointed.
From start to finish we were happy with our stay and the service we received from the start- couldn't fault anything.
The food was yummy and it was good we could pick anything on the menu as part of the groupon!

The only thing that ruined my stay was the weather - typical England!!

Dear cmck123,

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments on your stay at the Bell Inn back in March.
We are delighted that you had such an enjoyable stay with your mother, it was unfortunate about the good old English weather!
We hope to see you again in the future when we do another voucher offer.

Checked in for a golf break and the pro shop was literally across the car park, as was The Manor Course; The Forest Course is some 500 yds up a lane, so take the car if you can.

We ate in the hotel first night (we a £20 meal allowance): as is usual with these deals that doesn't go far, nor is it allowable against drinks. I had a decent whitebait starter, then good fish & chips, but my wife' s chicken dish was extortionate at £16.95 for two small strips of meat and a few veg.
Dining room was very bland and, although comfortable, not comforting....harsh lighting....corporate feel. Service was merely average....staff seemed bored, disinterested.

Breakfast was mostly buffet style with DIY toast.....no problems, except for lack of choice in cold section.

Our room (no 20) was a spacious and had a king size bed. Good sized, well-lit bathroom, but the bedroom itself had the dreaded and COMPLETELY USELESS energy saving bulbs making reading impossible!

Dear IanSimpson,

I am very disappointed that you found the Bell Inn very average and the meal in the restaurant was not great value. I will look at the portion sizes in our restaurant and get the chef to revise these, I have also changed the service for breakfast to a table service at the buffet will be removed and the cold section will be reviewed.
I am sorry that you couldn't read because of the lighting but we do take energy saving and recycling very seriously and so we do have energy saving bulbs at the Bell Inn.
Thank you for taking the time to write your review and we hope to see you in the future.

I did not stay at The Bell Inn, my wife & I were lodging nearby, but decided to try the restaurant as our hosts had recommended the food.
The restaurant area seems to prioritise seating house guests - not a problem, as the tables are clean, tidy and all reasonable located, although the front side is very close to a busy'ish junction of minor roads in The New Forest, but the many ponies frequenting the roads and green opposite do not make for much speeding traffic.
The service, hospitality and food for our meal was absolutely excellent. This is praise that I do not give lightly, as I like to dine fairly well and know my food! The pricing was not an issue, all very reasonable - you get what you pay for, which was superb quality here on our visit, so I am a bit surprised by other adverse comments.
I cannot comment on the accommodation. The staff were friendly enough.

Hugely disappointed. In short:
- not in Lyndhurst as much of the detail available suggests. Actually a good few miles away
- half the food on the menu was not available and the menu was overpriced anyway. We ate well for half the price with a better atmosphere in the local pub over the road
- grumpy irritable staff
- rooms clean but averagely equipped / decorated

Disappointed. And more so to have paid over £100 for it.

We stayed here because we had a wedding nearby, we were delighted when we arrived that we were able to check in early, had a very friendly greeting at reception, room was nice, very quaint, a bit noisy as it was facing the road, all seemed well until breakfast, which was an utter shambles, not enough food, had to queue up 3 times and even then food was not being replenished quickly enough, we were asked if we wanted toast, and gave up after 35 minute wait. A very stressed and bordering on rude gentleman seemed to be in charge of proceedings, but clearly could not cope. A real shame, as lovely setting, friendly reception and the feel of a proper old style hotel.

Room Tip: Avoid the ones facing the road, as noisy early in the morning

I stayed here a few times over 20 years ago and it was superb then. It still has a lot going for it, although improvements could be made. The setting is ideal, just a few minutes from the M27, yet in the forest, with the ponies strolling around. It's a quaint country inn, with a small hotel, nice beer garden and access to 2 golf courses. I didn't play on this occasion, but both courses are well worth playing if you get chance. The Forest course is an experience in itself, with greens fenced off to keep the ponies and cattle off. We wanted 3 nights but the room was only available for one night, so we moved on to another hotel, which I'll revue next. On arriving, the receptionist was friendly and helpful. We requested extra milk for the room and were given a jug of fresh milk, rather than the sachets. We had room 17 which is small and cramped. It's on the front of the hotel, so the traffic noise is terrible, especially late evening and early morning. Being on a slight bend and 3-way junction makes it even worse. The traffic is much heavier now than it used to be. The room and en-suite could do with upgrading, but were adequate for one night. The step up into the en-suite needs repairing as the creaking can be heard over the traffic noise. As we got a very good deal on the special offer rate, we were prepared to live with that. The bar and restaurant staff were helpful and friendly, although seemingly quite inexperienced ... trying to be too formal and stuffy ... we don't need overuse of 'sir' or 'madam' in this type of establishment. The main man at breakfast, an elderly Spanish guy, was very good and added a more relaxed touch to things. We had dinner in the hotel, included in the rate we paid, which was excellent value for money. The food was very, very good, although rather a 'nouveau cuisine' style small helping. Breakfast was also very good. There were a few small things wrong, like no spoons for the cereal, no milk with the tea etc., so we had to keep catching the attention of the waitress ...irritating when you're trying to have a relaxing break.
Finally, to the main issue ... we had to complain about the state of the toilet which had been left soiled. We were given a discount off our bill to compensate for this, which was a nice gesture, but not what we mentioned it for. The table we had in the restaurant was that sticky, our wine glasses stuck to it. I think the cleaning staff need retraining or sacking. All in all, a disappointing stay in an 'old favourite'. It's still has so much going for it, but I think the rooms need a bit of attention and the staff need a lot better training, especially the cleaner.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back, away from the traffic noise.

Dear billhayes,

Thank you for your comments regarding you recent stay at the Bell Inn, I am sorry to hear that your stay wasn't perfect and we are going to refurbish room 17 along with a couple more rooms that need completing as the rest of the hotel has been done, I have discussed with my housekeeper the toilet and she is devastated that this has happened as our standards are normally very high. I am glad that you enjoyed your evening meal and breakfast, we have had issues with our restaurant tables, they have become sticky so we have started to re-varnish them.
Kind regards

Only stayed one night at the Bell Inn (as a TravelZoo deal), but we were extremly impressed with both the Inn itself & the efficiency of the staff.
We had a large Delexe Room at the Front of the Inn, which was spacious, well equiped & nicely furnished, with a large Bathroom. (Also had free Wi-fi which was a bonus) There was some noticeable Traffic noise from the Road outside during the day, but it didnt cause us any problems sleeping at night.
Gardens & grounds were all imaculate, & the Restaurant was quaint cosy.
Nice selection of dishes on the Menu, a little on the expensive side, but I had the Lobser Thermidor & it was worth every penny. Breakfast was buffet style & had everthing you could wish for from Cereal & Toast to Full English.
Would definately stay here again.
